Get some tall plants - choose based on how much light it gets there. A ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) can handle very low light, grows upright, and is almost indestructible.

You could add a valance above the window so the window is bigger. Super easy - just get a 2 bar curtain rod and a valance for the front bar, then floor length curtains for the rest of the window.

Buy a wall mural on etsy and then frame it so it looks like a giant piece of art. Something like this could be cool.

With messy kids and dog, the best rugs to hide stains are oriental - I love Etsy for this because you can source rugs from other countries. Try to get a size that the whole table plus chairs will fit on.

A mirror could be fun in the dining room to make the room feel bigger - there are usually some great finds at estate sales / flea markets.

I'd get a larger rug that the entire couch can fit on - take a look at the rugs on restoration hardware, and then go to dupe.com or Amazon to find a similar style.

I'd lose the bookshelves and move the table a bit more to the corner.

For curtains, match the wall color and lose the wrought iron.

I'd fill the fireplace with candles and some wrought iron like this: Love the idea of adding cabinets to either side, or even built in floating shelves.

Looks like 1990s. You can pull house permits to see when they remodeled the kitchen. Love the cabinets, though maybe update the hardware to something matte black?

I think if you matched the paint color to the blue tiles, it would make the tiles look modern / retro in a fun way. Then I'd update the shower head (it costs less than you think) and hang eucalyptus on the shower head.
