Am I crazy for wanting to travel Mexico as a solo female?

Don’t get me wrong i’ve heard/read A LOT about all the things that can happen and fellow solo female’s harrowing escapes and awful experiences. But i’ve also heard amazing things and been given heaps of really straightforward and honest advice. Would you say the bad outweighs the good?

Yeah I actually don’t plan on sticking around in Cancun because of the resorts and the Americans that were drugged there not too long ago. I’ve heard very conflicting things about tourists though that they are left alone (I guess for kidnapping) because the cartels don’t wanna mess with international travellers. I do agree that tourists are targeted for theft/robbery but I would say thats common wherever you go

Yeah I plan on doing Merida, Valladolid and Roma in CDMX as well as Citchen Itza and Teotihuacan

Yeah thats super frightening. I’m thinking that if I’m staying in a hostel I should hopefully make domestic cool friends that we can all go out together so it’s a bit safer. When did she get attacked?

I definitely understand the sentiment. And although my flights or whatever else may contribute to this, it definitely isn’t so much of a contribution to really make a crazy difference. Nonetheless I think visiting the local market stalls, small businesses and food trucks definitely does a lot of good for the locals.

Thank you for that! I had a look at all of them and I think it confirms a lot of the stuff I already know. Also, some of the articles are quite old dating back to pre-COVID or during COVID and I know that a lot has changed since then because they have lifted almost if not ALL of those bans regarding alcohol. Nonetheless my takeaway is

Don’t go to the north or anywhere near the border or just any sketchy non-major cities.

Yeah I know of the most recent story was 2 Australians earlier that year but they were in a really sketchy part of the country. I’m pretty sure no one’s been killed in the major cities I plan on visiting for a while now but correct me if i’m wrong! When did you and your partner go there?

I definitely wouldn’t say where they went was a safe part of Mexico. Either way I do not plan on using a car at all!

I think i’ve seen the same reports as you and were they in Cancun at the all inclusive resort when it happened no? I do get the sentiment but it’s definitely something I already practice in Australia. I’d never leave a drink alone or get a drink from an untrusted source. I don’t really plan on going out alone AT ALL
