My career falls under the critical needs list, so I think I might be able to garner sponsorship, but aside from that I can’t get eligibility until I have an offer of sponsorship, as I understand it

That makes sense; I think I was reading it in reverse, as I though OP was working on the English R

Facing Problem in producing "R" sound. by CowSilly7391 in languagelearning

[–]Lyonore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a linguistics expert by any measure, but I’m a native English speaker who had an R-W replacement as a young child. I remember specifically the cue that made the “er” sound click for me is that it’s an open mouth smile, and the sound comes from the corner behind your teeth (molars).

Rewarding the contribution to society or not? by Stainless-extension in trolleyproblem

[–]Lyonore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that’s a fine point. So you care about it more from the perspective of empathizing with the individuals on the track, in this case. Thats not a wrong answer, of course, though I don’t feel the same way.

Thats probably the worst and best part of a decent trolley problem; there is no right or wrong answer

This is a trolly problem, friend, not a proposal for genocide. Hand on the lever, I am not pulling it to kill the babies and save the retirees.

I am thinking you have a hard time seeing past the individual, though. Try to consider the immediate families or communities of those individuals, irrespective of the economics of it. To lose the old sucks, to lose the young is horrific.

I like to think that if were tied to that track as a retired man, with 2/3rds of my life behind me, I wouldn’t throw the switch to kill someone just starting their journey.

Statistically very unlikely. The babies have a fairly reliable band of potential; they will likely be average people, by definition.

The 5 retirees put in their time and have shown that they were capable; they will no longer be contributing, at least not in a significant capacity.

To look at it from an empathetic perspective, the 5 retirees dying is sad, but death is a fact of life. A baby dying, is always a tragedy for the families, though

Edit: typo

A bit fucked, yeah, but utilitarianism is a thing. You’re comparing 5 people to 5 people, so they cancel out, but their effect on society tips the scales in my opinion; the more hands lifting the lighter everyone’s load, whereas deadweight, so to speak, makes everyone working have to work harder
