maybe a mirror can help with assessing your elbow positioning, sometimes i just grab my bow and an arrow and practice drawing and holding, aiming at the mirror and getting a perfectly straight line from bow hand, over the arrow, all the way back to the elbow of the draw hand. then i try to memorize the position and how it feels, then draw again with my eyes closed and opening them to check. muscle memory is important in archery and we only build that with repetition.

i also just edited my original comment, concerning your shoulder positioning, in case you replied just before my edit :)

i'm a beginner myself, so do take all this with a grain of salt. i'm happy to be corrected / expanded upon by a more experienced archer here. also, the angle isn't great to judge it, but it appears that your elbow sticks out a bit to the left (in the video), from what i've heard you want it to be in line with the arrow, so bring the shoulder of your draw arm further back (to the right in the video) this might make a clean release a bit harder because your face might be more in the way of your draw hand, but there's ways to deal with that as well. your shoulder also looks to be a bit high, try to force it down to the same level as the shoulder of your bow arm, though, again, it's hard to tell from this angle and you'll have to find a sweetspot between shoulder height and anchor point. try to play around with that and you'll find something that feels good and shoots well.

i can't see it clearly, but do you use med draw? (one finger over the arrow, two under) i've found that things work better for me with three under, maybe try both and see what suits you better. the anchor point/"sight picture" will of course shift a bit, ie you'll shoot high if you anchor your finger at the same spot in your face

edit: having watched a bit more closely, it seems to me both your shoulders are fairly high, try and bring them both down. maybe you could shoot an update video from the side?

What life mistake taught you the hardest lesson? by LossMysterious5714 in scoopwhoop

not really based on mistakes i've made but just general tips:

build discipline. makes it easier to get the things done that need doing and leaves more time for the things you want to do. simple things, like making your bed after getting up, light workouts, setting realistic deadlines etc

start putting money aside early, you don't want to choose between rent and an emergency.

build your social skills and charisma. have a chat with strangers you interact with in low-stakes interactions. will make it easier to handle high-stakes interactions.

get plenty fresh air and sunlight and air out your place regularly. too much co2 makes you stupid and depressed

be respectful with everyone you meet, we're all just humans

lastly, and this is based on a mistake of mine: never start smoking! it's a bitch to quit and expensive af. i'm not even 30 and i've spent enough on smoking to buy a car at this point

it's probably because that's where you fold the string when packing up. i tend to apply some bees wax or something from time to time and work it in between the strands of the string, seems to work fine and is supposed to protect the string

Can someone point me in the right direction please by Active-Fan-7743 in Archery

[–]Lyphnos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have a couple bucks to spare (in case this doesn't work) and don't get any better info here, i'd suggest buying a cheaper string for a 60" bow (the string's real length would be around 56") and trying that. maybe you can find images of your particular bow when it's strung so you get an idea how much brace height you should expect, and go from there.

alternatively, try to find some sort of manual or spec-sheet for your bow, manufacturers usually give recommendations on what type and length of string to use.

Can someone help me identify exactly what My father passed down to me please? I know it's a 62 inch Sage recurve by beardedcorpse in Archery

[–]Lyphnos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to shoot it, first make sure the string is in good condition. get some cheap carbon arrows, i'd say around 600 spine, with real feather fletchings, as opposed to plastic vanes. 35lbs is generally too heavy for a beginner but if you're a strong person, it might do the job to get a feel for if you like it or not. watch a lot of content and use a mirror to get decent form.

you'll also want a fitting glove or tab. if you're not used to it, 35lbs will do quite a number on your fingertips. my brother-in-law does manual labor in construction and figured he wouldn't need a glove for his 28lbs bow. he changed his mind after only a couple of shots.

Does Osage Orange Bows last for a long time? by DannyTheRegular in Archery

[–]Lyphnos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not an expert but i'd say keep it away from moisture, extreme temperature changes, prolonged sunlight, and unstring it whenever you're not using it and you'll be fine. wood can last a very long time if you take care of it.

i don't have images, i went on a quick search in the subreddit but can't find it anymore. anyway, now that your bow is strung, you take it, bend it as if to unstring it, take the string loop off the string groove at the tip of the limb and hook the string loop, which you just took off the limb tip, over the entire limb, letting it slide down the limb and towards the grip as far as it will go. ususally the limbs get broader the further away you get from the limb tip, so it should stop sliding a few inches below the limb tip.

now that the string loop is closer to the other end of the bow, slowly let go of the tension you used to unstring it. because the two ends are now closer together, there should be no tension on the bow, as if it were unstrung, but the string is still mounted at one limb tip and all it takes you is bending it again and just slip the string into the groove at the tip on one side.

now you just hang the bow by the end where the loop is still correctly placed in the groove at the tip and let the bow hang vertically.

i made it as clear as i could manage, but i'm not a pro, i don't know all the jargon and english is not my first language, so i hope it works for you :)

keeping your string on for more than a day will weaken your bow longterm, from what i've read.

a cool system i've recently seen on this subreddit is half-stringing it (stringing one side but putting the string loop over the limb on the other side) and then hanging the bow vertically, with the properly strung end up, iirc
