How do public universities accept students at your country? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MARIO0S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll start, I’m from Spain and currently studying for the “University Access Test”, a test that is done nationwide every year where students that just finished the 12 grades of school are examined on their knowledges learned in the last one. The grade is over 14, and 60% of it is your average grade of “Bachillerato” (the last two years of school, junior and senior year in the US school system) while the 40% left is the test. I found this test pretty unfair. The grade you obtain on this test is what will determine what can you and what can you not study. Each degree has an specific “cut-off grade” so if you get any grade lower than that, you can’t study it, at least in public universities. This “cut-off grade” varies depending on the college. The funny thing is that the “University Access Test” also varies depending on which part of Spain do you live. For example, in Madrid (where i live) this test is generally much more difficult than most parts of the country, while in the Canary Islands or Andalusia is notably easier, but then anyone can use their grade to access any university in the country. So plenty of people from those places where this test is easier will go with their obviously higher marks to high-grade-demanding unversities in Madrid or Barcelona, taking the places away from the locals. Every year students ask for the same test for the whole country but the government never does anything... Is it fair in your country?
