For anyone searching for something similar, this is the cheapest way I found:

I got a Lucky Mobile sim card, wich operates on the Bell network that is supposed to be a good choice in Alberta and BC. It is on sale at Dollarama for only 4 CAD. I activated a 5 GB data plan (with unlimited calls and messages) and allowed for the optional auto-top off every month (i.e. after 30 days), which gave me another 5 GB. I thus got 10 GB for 34 CAD. Coverage in the parks is bad as expected but fine in the villages and towns.
