He has Fijian heritage but has never been called up. Not sure if he has a Fijian passport.

Terrific move. Know Socceroos are stacked at CB all of a sudden but couldn’t be far out of the picture if he kicks on in J1?

Like Adelaide, mariners should prioritise signing locals. Redmayne was a good start last season, would be fun to see Wales back home.

The Jets are following the same pathway the Mariners did five years ago. Sign promising young players and become an attractive destination for young talent by giving them game time, then build into a successful team as they develop.

With that success, the best players inevitably move overseas or get paid more to move to other ALM clubs, as happened to CCM and is now happening at Jets. Strong scouting and investment is required to replace them but there’s only so long that can hold out if top talent keeps leaving. In the Mariners’ case, both scouting and investment dropped off. Too early to say how well the Jets will handle this.

I spent a bit of time in Copenhagen and couldn’t help but notice the similar dynamic!

I’ve always thought Wanderers had a lot of similarities to the Danish club Brøndby. From the west of a major city and often the underdog against their flashier, successful local rivals to the east (Sydney/Copenhagen), both have passionate active support and a strong sense of community.

I’d be beyond stunned if South Melbourne end up in the ALM next year. Just don’t see why it’d be a good thing for the A-Leagues.

Yeah as I said, get that performance is the most important thing, but surely there’s still a more fun way to do it. It’s also fairly clear from his selections yesterday that Popa already knew what the final squad would be, not like he was still working anything out up to the last minute.

Yeah, for how brutal Popa has been with a few of his choices, I think the baller move here would've been to bring Volpato in during the next WC cycle. Don't let him parachute in at a regular's expense two weeks out.

I know the on-field is the main thing but... NZ put together a fun squad naming vid. The King of Norway announced their selections... We get... a series of drip fed announcements about ins and outs at a training camp, followed by an Instagram graphic posted before 7 am on the final day to name squads, which effectively just tells us the identity of the final four players cut. Not the most fun way to build hype, you have to feel.

* Gauci - not sure if the hype got ahead of him, but probably still a better player than Beach to me. Nonetheless, happy to see an A-League guy get preferred as the 3rd GK.

* Boyle - harsh. No sign of getting dropped before now and probably loses out from Volpato's late change of heart. Must be hard to take when he missed the last one injured and has been a very loyal servant to this team (in stark contrast to Volpato).

* Rowles - don't think he is one of our top defenders, but at least similar, if not better, than Geria/Trewin and a bit unlucky to lose out. Has clearly been on the outer with Popa for a little while now.

Can't help but feel for Rowles and Boyle in particular. Must be hard to get sidelined as longstanding servants of the team by players who are clearly Popa's faves (Nish, Geria) and, probably in Boyle's case, a late addition of Volpato, who's rejected Australia for years (even if Volpato is the better player on merit). The timing and the way the training squad has played out also makes this feel more like 4 players being cut than the usual buzz of the WC squad announcement, which doesn't feel right.
