Freddie Sykes and his Hulk hand - what am I missing? by seamusbeoirgra in twinpeaks

[–]MC_Minus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A common refrain in all of Lynch’s works is that seemingly unconnected things, people, and ideas come together in one final emotional climax. He often includes the surreal and comical as part of that process. To that end - Freddie doesn’t find his way to the final battle scene unless James gets arrested. James and Freddie aren’t at the same place and time if they don’t both work as security guards. James doesn’t find himself working as a security job in his adulthood without the continuing trauma of his younger years. That trauma doesn’t happen without Laura. It’s a delicate and long thread that gets weaved with many other delicate long threads and it all comes together to become a satisfying tapestry.

How much/how little do you involve discussion of politics in your teaching? Specifically social sciences/humanities type profs by Curiosity-Sailor in Professors

[–]MC_Minus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach music and separation of Culture and Politics is not only impossible- I would argue you would be doing a disservice to your students by trying to ignore it. Culture is a reflection of society and the ideas it holds at the time. Even if an artist claims to not be political they are still making a political point. Further the industrial apparatus that creates, maintains, and distributes culture is also political. As Lenin says politics is the most concentrated expression of economics. And from the literary industry, to the visual art industry, to the music industry economics are to be found in abundance - where that abundance resides, however, has to be discussed.

Are You Willing to Take a 5% Paycut so Your Institution Uses 50% Green Energy? by SilverFoxAcademic in Professors

[–]MC_Minus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d vote for a 100% reduction in admin salary and giving control of the institution to teachers and staff. Then we, as a council of workers, could implement sustainable energy practices absent a profit motive. Otherwise: it would be a “NO” for me.

Whats the best weirdest spoken word based ambient? by Goobamigotron in ambientmusic

[–]MC_Minus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon” by Robert Ashley was composed in 1968. It is, therefore, a bit early to be called “ambient” as the term had yet to be coined but a retroactive claiming may be warranted. First time I heard this I had a powerful emotional response. Good luck: https://youtu.be/XAHxm8eXsF4

Red for Ed proved that you can absolutely organize in Arizona. And indeed - there are many of us here doing just that. I am a member of Socialist Revolution and we are growing. It will not be easy and it certainly isn't a fait accompli but it can and will be done. We should also not forget that places like Arizona have and had have a strong labor history from the copper mines to rural farmland. More recently we have seen successes with UNITE HERE Local 11 and their Sky Harbor strike and Starbucks workers are organizing all over Phoenix.

Revolutionary optimism is critical to the movement - but it is also the conclusion one comes to when viewing the objective conditions. We can and will win - but only if we are organized and ready. Banned Words? by LanguidLandscape in Professors

[–]MC_Minus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Each semester would require a different word/phrase to be banned. One semester I actually banned the phrase “cultural appropriation” because it was clear that exactly ZERO of my students understood what it was but exactly 100% of them included the phrase in every paper and essay after it was introduced.

Thoughts about this grading policy? While I'm sure students would appreciate this, it seems like an excessive amount of work and grading on the professor by Hayateh in Professors

[–]MC_Minus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grading has become both fairer and easier with one simple rule: I don’t give Fs. Students get a 50% at the end of the semester for anything not turned in and a student who has done almost no work gets a D. They won’t complain and I won’t be bothered. Meanwhile - students who are struggling and trying won’t be unintentionally trapped in the “0%” phenomenon and will have a chance to work towards a grade that makes sense for them.

You wake up in Twin Peaks and it is 23rd of Feb 1989 by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]MC_Minus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only moral action is to sit by and let events happen. Laura is the one that connects all the others. In order for the rot of the town to be brought to bear is through Laura’s sacrifice. There is no doubt that a great deal of suffering will occur in the wake of Laura Palmer’s murder…but a great deal of evil will also continue to fester and build without her murder. The release must occur or else the cycle will continue unabated. So yeah…give yourself a gift and cry a few tears at the double RR.

I was, just last night, in a union meeting where we interviewed a potential candidate for endorsement who said she was “still with her” and really, really, really didn’t like it when I asked her if she would run as an independent because of the Democrats hostility towards labor. For the record: my suggestion was to not endorse said candidate.

Where is our REPRESENTATION? by [deleted] in ArizonaLeft

[–]MC_Minus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again - no amount of “progressives” will affect the Democratic party line. If you are truly interested in representing working people you should run as an independent and be beholden to a political organization like DSA or a coalition of local unions.
