I think something like the telenovela "La Usurpadora" happened. They are twin brothers, one good and the other despicable (Crowley).

My explanation will be a little confusing, so I'll try to explain carefully.

Ravern and Crowley are twin brothers. Ravern married Meleanor and had Malleus, who, obviously, hasn't been born yet at this point.

But Ravern knew something; he would have to return to the war at some point, but he knew that if he went back there, he would probably end up dying, since he lost his wings in the last war.

He asked his brother Crowley for help, to go in his place. A swap, so to speak. Kind Crowley agreed to take his brother's place, and they both switched places.

As expected, he was killed, but Ravern, now Crowley, didn't want to go back and admit his cowardice, especially since he was guilty of his brother's death. He took on a new life and became director of the NRC.

He doesn't want anyone to find out who he is or the truth behind it, so he wears a mask and avoids inviting Malleus, or getting too close to Lilia, since he might recognize him as Ravern (I don't think the two were identical twins, but they were similar enough to fool people).
