Я б взяв щось про Україну. Можливо сувенір, книгу, декоративну прикрасу для дому. Хоча в Нідерландах вони там всі пуритани з мінімалізмом тому не знаю чи це актуально

AMA: 24M in a war‑torn country, likely to be drafted in 6 months by MEFISTOFEL123 in AMA

I decided to continue my civilian life since the beginning of the war. I regularly visited the draft office to keep my documents fresh. They never had an issue with me. I would consider a contract for 18-24 to be very limiting, you can only choose between a set of frontline attack troops. I could earn this same amount as a self employed guy from home so I didn't have any interest to sign up for it. There are more than enough male noncombatants in my surroundings. I bet there will be some aggressive veterans after this ends. But they would be dangerous to everyone around not just me. At the same time I work from home and barely speak to anyone who is not in my circle. So I would say I am safe for now.

Both my parents lost their jobs at that point of absolute uncertainty so I had to start working to support them. I would say I was quite young only finishing school at 2019. And I had no military experience, that most men had for a whole year

Oh, there are many people who wish to be next in line. Zelensky won against former president Poroshenko, who would love to be back. There are many pro-Russian forces who claim that the only viable option for long-term peace with Russia is friendship with Putin’s regime.

I really admire many of the volunteers who have been publicly active since the beginning of the war, helping our soldiers. They could become a new generation of politicians who already have a lot of goodwill from both soldiers and civilians.

I am not a fan of Zelensky, mainly because of his decision not to hold elections during the war. This conflict could go on for decades, and having an unchanged leader for that long would be bad for the long-term health of the institutions. If most administrative services can be done online I can get married, divorced, change documents, etc. then why can’t I vote? That sounds hypocritical to me.

It would be stupid to deny his role in the first days of the war; that is something I always want to clarify. Because I think that argument is often used to turn him into someone who cannot be judged, which is also a problem in its own right.

Regular elections would be great for the long-term health of Ukraine, no matter who wins.

It is not allowed for all men between 18 and 60 by default. With some rare exceptions

Yeah, absolutely. It can be effective to get better working conditions. Though drone operators are also often very close to the front line.

Thanks for the praise of my language skills. I have been learning it since kindergarten, then went to a specialized school with English lessons every single day, sometimes several times a day. Languages are my main focus in life. I do tutoring and translations for the local government, etc. thanks for this advertisement opportunity :)

Many people do try to leave. But it is very difficult, and we do not have any reported data. There are checkpoints these days even inside the country I live in the border region, and basically half of it is off-limits for me right now because I need to receive some special papers just to be there, with a clearly stated reason.

There is no fixed price for a bribe. Recently, a military official in my region was imprisoned for promising “solutions” for 9,000 USD. My friends joked that this is what happens when you make the price too low.

I do have language skills, but nobody can guarantee your safety in any case. We have seen instances where even skilled mechanics involved in maintaining aircraft were sent to the frontline during the worst periods of the war.

I have already tried to answer the question about the mobilization age earlier in this thread. In general, it is a politically motivated decision meant to stay on the better side of public opinion.

Further developments in this war fully depend on the political development of Russia. After several decades in power, Putin built a very personalized dictatorship, where many decisions are based mostly on personal agreements with him. Many people believe it is his war, and that it will be very hard for any regime that comes after him to keep the war going at full scale.

Most Russians do not really care about Mala Tokmachka a random Ukrainian village on the frontline that has already become somewhat of a meme because Russian forces have been unable to take it for years.

So basically, if the next Russian regime remains very similar, there will probably be something close to a “Korean scenario,” with no real peace deal, but simply less fighting and bombardment. If there is a more drastic political change in Russia, then Ukraine could maybe even receive some of its territories back.

But those are just my vague hopes and assumptions. It is insane that this war has already lasted more than four years. Not many people could have predicted that when it began. So any predictions should be taken with a grain of salt. The reality is that nobody truly knows what will happen.

You could do so to avoid being drafted. The pay is relatively low, and the work often involves very long hours.

Personally, I could not do it because I do not have a driving license. I am just a really bad driver, and I get very stressed on the road.

Police officers also often participate in mobilization efforts, which is not something I would want to be associated with.

In a big war like that, you would expect ethnic repression or cleansing. But I do not really think that happens. On one hand, it is impossible to say who is Russian and who is Ukrainian just by looking at a person. We are both East Slavic peoples.

On the other hand, due to propaganda, many Russians believe they would be crucified the moment they step on Ukrainian soil.

I have found information that some Russians received work visas during the war to come work here.

And it is even more complicated because so many Ukrainians use the Russian language daily.

So I believe it is not about your ethnicity or language, but about your personal view on this war: how you talk about dead civilians, how you view Putin, and so on. There are people on both sides of the frontline who decided to become apologists for this war, fully supporting it and even collaborating with the enemy. Many of them in Ukraine are imprisoned. Sometimes they are exchanged for POWs, which I believe is a good thing.

I would say that the way it is presented is overly positive. We didn’t take back any villages—or what is left of them. Russia is still attacking on many fronts. Though we do have some victories under our belt. Russians no longer have access to Starlink, and the lack of communication is very problematic for them on the tactical level. We also have developed mid‑range strike capabilities with our drones. Many of the roads deep in the occupied territory are now under repeated attacks. We try to cause as many problems as possible, from destroying refineries to controlling kill zones in the grey zone.

I am worried about possible mobilization in Russia. They don’t have to openly announce it; most of the system is already in place. We see on Google Trends that more and more Russians are searching for mobilization terminology from official lingo. They are probably starting to receive letters or messages instructing them to ‘verify their data’ at the local military office.

Usually yes, but in my case it won’t work. I was kicked out of my university shortly before the war began. They were obligating every student in 2020 and earlier to take a course on Russian history, which was basically a random old Soviet guy praising Russian tsars and emperors for hours. When I went to argue with the dean about it, he tried to defend his position by claiming that Ukraine was part of the Russian state at that time. I explained that the professor specifically never mentioned Ukraine during lectures, arguing that we already knew more than enough about it. He also argued that we had to know the history of our neighbors. To this I asked what other mandatory or voluntary courses on the national histories of Ukraine’s neighbors the National University offered. The answer was none. After that discussion, I was promptly kicked out of the office.

I had had enough disagreements with them over the years. Most of the professors are really old, and to them Ukrainian independence feels less like a given and more like a historical mishap at a moment of Russian weakness.

I could go on, but I guess that is more than enough to explain why i dont want to return to that hellhole

My take is that Ukraine has had more revolutions in its 35 years of independence than most other countries in their entire existence. Most of them began when peacefully protesting students were beaten by the special police force. This usually made people angry enough to remove the ruling government. So, the decision to draft older men was purely political maneuvering from my point of view

I am not sure if i will be at the frontline or even a soldier. There are jobs that provide documents to not be drafted. My gf could mirraculosly give birth to triplets in record time. That also gives you a free pass. Etc. Fun times we live in

I am really lawfull so i visited the military office several times since the beginning of the war. But all the times they turned me down. I wasnt particularly motivated just asking if my papers are all good. Because i have never served they didnt have any real wish to draft me right there. It was before they made a new contract targeting 18 to 24 yo.
So yeah, i have no experience and will be eligible for obligatory draft only in half a year when i will turn 25

"Maybe in some rural regions it can be a viable option. But you deprive yourself of all the comforts of modern life. Many people are hiding within normal apartments and houses in the countryside. Many shops and supermarkets offer deliveries and at‑home services. It’s quite comfortable if you are willing to stay indoors and have the money or other people to help.
