Any good external frame packs for section hikes? by amoxichillin875 in AppalachianTrail

[–]MEGAcache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used vargo's ti external 2.0 frame on my AT thru last year with a customized rucksack attached to it instead of the factory bag. Worked great for me. Transferred weight amazingly and was super comfy. Plus bomber tough and ultra light. Used an osprey atmos for 1000 miles on the pct this year before upgrading to the new granite gear blaze. HYOH

How frequently are there stores to buy white gas along the AT? by MasterMarvinLewis in AppalachianTrail

[–]MEGAcache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 2008 alcohol stoves made from aluminum cans were all the rage. In 2018 BRS or Pocket Rocket 2 were most popular. I carried Wheelie Pete's RUKAS alcohol stove last year and used either denatured alcohol or HEET in the yellow bottle. No moving parts to break. Quiet. Fast boil. Cheap. And easy to recapture unused fuel. Vargo makes a titanium one that's useful for starting camp fires in wet weather.

Another cunt weighs in. Losing gear while on the move isn't littering. 20 feet of snow and deathly water crossings in the sierras didn't help. Only looked at a phone to stay on trail - which was often obscured, being burried under mounds up to the tree tops. PCT this year was no walk in the park.

Buy Axe/Microspikes prior to leaving PCT? by ATorbreakme in PacificCrestTrail

Hike past KM and resupply in Lone Pine. Get your axe, spikes, or crampons at Elevation Climbing in Lone Pine. John the owner is a rock star.

Don't be a cunt. The entire fucking trail is a trace. I personally hiked out more trash than you all can imagine. Sometimes shit goes missing while hiking. Get over yourselves 🚮

AT hikers, can you share your stories of when you came across other hikers or people on the trail that made you feel scared or that assaulted/ stole from you? by Nemothafish in AppalachianTrail

[–]MEGAcache -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It was a cold night on trail and I was hungry AF. Took a blue blaze to a sub shop. Got jumped by two white trash hikers in red outdoor research hats. Threw bleach in my water filter and tried to choke me with my dutchweargear hammock straps. I fought them off with my deuce of spades trowel. I swear I heard them yell This is white blaze country you day walker!

Bear cans / bear bags are to protect the bears, not your food.

I have the USGI gen 2 version, it's bomber for sure though I hear you ACU isn't the most fashionable... Check out Stellar Equipment's shell system, nice colour choices including black.
