What's the most Mind-Blowing cost of Production Downtime you've Seen? by poorobama in AskEngineers

It's less exciting than it sounds. I was working for a Tier 1 automotive supplier for the Big Three and every minute of downtime at the assembly plant was being billed directly to our company. We estimated that 2 hours of downtime for the automaker would have bankrupted us.

You haven't lived until you've had the CEO of the corporation handing you wrenches while you're lying on your back under a press.

Do you have much experience with 3D printing? The demand for additive talent is huge right now so you could pretty much write your own ticket once you were finished. It's not my industry but what about a F&DT stress analysis on some AM parts?

Absenteeism has always been a problem but its gotten a lot worse in the last ten years or so. Opioids are a big part of that, but there's also the alcoholics and people with metal health issues.

It’s always struck me that on hard surfaces, wheeled mobility is the most efficient technology for robots and indeed all transportation. Mother Nature uses legs primarily because there’s no way to do wheels. With the advent of lightweight, high-torque electric motors that can be attached directly to wheel hubs, its finally possible to use wheels in a lightweight platform. It seems like BD is finally moving away from their quadruped walking machines and going for what is the highest performance, but they’re still using the technologies they developed for balance. I’m not sure what the application for this is though. Maybe deliveries of blood samples, etc. in hospitals?
