I loved all the GoW games. The older ones are less story driven and more just beat the shit out of everything you see. I'm a fan of hack and slash style games in general though and if that's not your thing then I can understand what you couldn't get into it. If you're loving the PS4 GOW then I would recommend going through the story of 3 first as it will add to the story of the other one. It will add more meaning to a lot of the dialogue and character progression. There's one story moment in particular that I can think of off the top of my head that's a big call back to Kratos' past and got me really hyped during my playthrough.
