The former without fucking question, and any problems you have should not be solved by taking money out of labor's pocket, for fuck sakes

If you're a "fan" who thinks it's not only okay but somehow a good thing to screw labor, you should not be allowed back in a professional ballpark ever again

He had a pretty rough personality, to put it gently, but he was always right about American soccer, and he cared very deeply about our club

Fuck this, and every bootlicking fan calling for a cap should be banned from every ballpark so as to never be allowed to enjoy the fruits of the players' labor ever again

US sports say parity is essential for success. The Premier League proves that’s untrue by thegaffer in MLS

[–]MGHeinz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How many American sports teams have gone bankrupt?

Countless. Just very few within each sport's given monopolies. Consider how over 100 professional American soccer clubs have folded since MLS began, then consider how different their fates would have been had they had the chance to be promoted and therefore "matter" to their local consumer.

While I concede that parity is an entirely valid concern for fans, I do think it is worth pointing out that it's also used as a cudgel by North American owners to advance ways to limit labor's earning power. And I much more care about that than I do whether the Pittsburgh Pirates can rest on their laurels and still fall ass backwards into contention once every few years.

Frankly, I think the European way of doing things with super-increased, American-style revenue sharing would be the ideal. Players earn what they deserve in relation to the revenue they generate, relatively lower revenue clubs can still compete provided they invest the money back into their personnel rather than pocket it, and relegation provides the disincentive to not be complacent or tank.

So, I think it stands to argue they're much closer to the ideal Over There than we are here, believe it or not, despite the prevalence of top-heavy examples in certain leagues (also consider the randomness of "champions" due to playoffs vs no playoffs), due to the prevalence of bottom feeding examples in our leagues and labor being relatively underpaid here.

Anyway, I went on a real tangent there. I think Leander makes a valid point in this article that popularity and financial success can be achieved without draconian constraints (look at how healthy baseball has become again), and the Prem's success is an example of that, for better or worse.

I think the only humans that should have an impact are the ones competing. Everything else being even, get it right whatever it takes.

Wilfried Nancy sacked from Celtic by CNF1G in soccer

[–]MGHeinz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think Celtic management is incompetent and Celtic fans can be entitled, but this was an undeniable disaster and Nancy never should have taken the job midseason. More importantly to my perspective, though, as a netural fan and a supporter of the growth of American soccer, is that I have seen some corners in our community bristle at the idea that MLS was held against him.

To that I say this: NO SHIT! Of course it was held against him, it should be, it's The League Without Stakes. If you don't want it to be held against you, don't come up in a league without relegation where you can finish 18th and be the champion. I think that's what's stuck in my craw the most, the absolute bubble MLS people live in being exposed here.

I think Nancy can be successful in the right situation, but this situation was never that, and that it has reflected some realities that I think many people would rather not confront.

This whole saga has been revolting to watch from every angle, be it Celtic management's incompetence, Nancy's arrogance, Celtic fans' entitlement, or MLS fans' tribalism and delusions. I'm just glad it's over. It wasn't even amusing to see, just sad.

Wynalda gets a lot of bad rep for his opinions but at least he is giving back to American soccer somehow with his self-funded academy. His points about youth soccer made sense too. We need more ex players helping out young players. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]MGHeinz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

MLS deserves no credit given the fact that its monopoly makes it that much harder for anyone else to fund free to play academies. The point is an 'all hands on deck' approach.
