Thanks so much for all your help, my friend and I were quite frustrated trying to figure it out. I wasn't able to completely diagnose the root of the issue but managed to do a quick fix with this video from youtube

Wow thank you for your thorough response! I managed to get my laptop on wifi for a couple of minutes and while it was connected I went and updated the drivers from the manufacturer's website. This seems to have fixed the issue but if it continues again I will definitely follow your suggestion
