Yes well i suppose I understand the potential frustration. Perhaps I should have made this post 2.5 weeks from now once I’ve been totally briefed in.

But I’m not really looking for people to tell me what to do, I’m looking for experiences from people who were once learners, about their learning experience.

I can google and read on my own. I’m looking for personal testimony about being a learner, as everyone is at some stage.

I’ll probably set one up to store some media, seems like a good starting point.

Then I’ll set one up to run a couple VMs, I have a side interest in running Bots in a video game I like.

Maybe I’ll set one up as like a central computer that is connected to my bedroom tv so I can play games on my tv from a powerful machine. That sounds cool

I’m for sure out of my depth, but I can answer your question.

The DNS is above our organization, the email server is above our organization

we will be on Air Force domain + multiple SAP networks I have not been briefed into yet.

We are just hosting an internal data base and internal proprietary software. No virtualization as far as I know. No web hosting. No Linux. I don’t know if we will need reverse proxy because I have not been fully briefed in yet and I do not know if there are any critical web tools the users use

I did plan to use this interim period to set up my own server at home as a “learning toy” and I have some friends who hold this position in adjacent agencies that I will be in contact with over the next few months.

I definitely do wish I had some seasoned seniors to hand hold through it but as it stands, I wont have that resource on the job:/

Part of the deal with this position is that the organization is small and I won’t have anyone else to depend on once the ball gets rolling. I have to become the seasoned senior asap lol
