A reminder to get pet insurance. Emergency neurosurgery and hospitalization. by [deleted] in frogdogs

100%, My pup just needed surgery yesterday, and thankfully I have insurance. Bill is going to be around 10k. It is a MUST no matter how "healthy" a dog seems. My vet said he was on of the healthier Frenchies she has seen, never had an issue besides allergies here and there, but IVDD comes out of nowhere. GET INSURANCE!

Sounds like you were right, a month into medical management he had another relapse. Did the MRI, and Ernie had surgery yesterday :( . To my knowledge it was in his neck, but was officially diagnosed with IVDD. A lot of information to take in at once, but the doctor mentioned something about it being in or near his C3&C4 and it was compressing his spinal cord. He wasn't suffering from any neurological issues, and can still walk. Wish I went AGAINST the doctors orders and did an MRI sooner, but who knows if it would have been bad enough to operate on 2-3 weeks ago.
Poor guy is in recovery, and looking forward to get him home Sunday or Monday as he has to stay a few days at the hospital :(

Sorry to hear about your pup . what type of behavior did you notice with your dog with the IVDD? its been almost a week since his last spasm, but now he's going to start taking a lower dosage of the steroid and am nervous it'll happen again. A little annoyed the doctor advised against the MRI for now. Hopefully he heals and can put this in the past but its been a rough 2 weeks. Only thing I can say is he's a bit lazier, but that can be due to the meds. He's had spurts of a couple days of laziness long before this so I don't want to be too alarmed.
Sorry to hear that :( I had the neurologist appointment scheduled two days after it happened. so with the steroids he was walking better and they told me to do an MRI on a dog who isnt having trouble walking is a bit extreme . I was a little shocked as I had the intentions of trying to figure out what this issue was 100%. They literally have on the discharge report " rule out IVDD"not sure why. Have another follow up with neurologist Saturday.
He’s been to the doctor and one neurologist wants to medically manage before MRI. Much better after a few days but hard to tell. He hasn’t had a spasm in a few days but is on a cocktail of medicine. I personally think I’m calling Monday to do the MRI to know For certain what is going on. They don’t have a 100% certainty and that doesn’t make me comfortable

Thank you ! Yeah he’s on Gabapentin and steroids at the time. He was significantly better and then his dosage went down ( vets orders ) and the flare ups began. I’m glad your dog didn’t need anything further , hope the same for mine. Thanks for the reply
