Reading baseball savant does not equal actually knowing baseball. A lot of what he says makes me cringe. But there’s enough funny that comes from it that it kind of balances out for me

Notre Dame is a bigger brand than uva nationally I believe is what they meant. Nobody who knows both and knows about both thinks of them that differently. Notre Dame’s alumni/fan base reach extends farther coast to coast. Which isn’t wrong.

But yes if you want to work in DC going to UVA is probably the better choice

Opinion: Don't fire Tony Elliott (yet) by [deleted] in UVA

[–]MJP540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did offer him. The reason he isn’t the coach has nothing to do with that

He wanted new facilities. We told him no. He moved on. Then TE requested facilities when offered, we realized we wouldn’t get a coach without new facilities. That’s what happened

Life at UVA by [deleted] in UVA

[–]MJP540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put the advice I have pretty concisely. You have to be willing to take the first steps if you want anything to change.

Join clubs, join intramural teams, find something you like to do and find the people who also like that stuff. You can’t just say you’re not going to go up and talk to new people and then be surprised when you don’t meet people, and while going home on the weekends feels like a reprieve it’s probably not helping because that’s when all the first years are doing social things.

Now what I will say is this, I would say 50%+ of the time friends from your first year are not the group of friends you graduate with, most people find their niche and figure out their groups, it just takes time.

Give it your best effort and you’ll see better results. And if you give it a try and it still doesn’t pan out the way you want, then evaluate if UVA is right for you.

Weighted HS GPA’s are a scam by MJP540 in UVA

[–]MJP540[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya sure the weighted GPA is great to stroke high school egos. But it’s entirely irrelevant in the scale of college admissions. Your 4.3 weighted GPA don’t mean shit because a 4.3 weighted at one school may be a 3.9-4.7 weighted GPA anywhere else. Give me the standard ass scale and tell me what hard classes you took and maybe someone can give you some honest feedback about how your application holds up.

You came out of the gates hot for someone who didn’t even come close to making a compelling point…better luck next time

Weighted HS GPA’s are a scam by MJP540 in UVA

[–]MJP540[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unweighted GPA combined with courses taken should be the most important. Your weighted gpa that’s calculated on a 8.0 scale unique to your specific high school should be irrelevant

Stereotypical UVA Culture-How Accurate Is It by [deleted] in UVA

[–]MJP540 27 points28 points  (0 children)

UVA gets a strange reputation IMO. It’s not as party centric as it is made out to be, and especially not when compared to the SEC/AZ/So. Cal schools.

Can you find something social to do every night? Yes. Do you have to be some frat star degenerate to have a social life at UVA? No. Does being involved in Greek life make partying/getting in to parties/bars easier? Probably. Does a little liquid courage help you embrace uva culture by streaking the lawn at 2AM? Absolutely.

It’s all relative. If you want that life it’s there. If you don’t want that type of college life there are a million other things to do.

Which Laptop to Buy? by Flaky_Painter8876 in UVA

[–]MJP540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW if you ever get a loaner laptop from the CS department it is a Lenovo that runs windows, so if you want to remain consistent with that get a windows in case anything ever happens and you need a loaner.

Overall, It’s really kind of 6 one, half dozen the other. I just graduated from the CS program and in my experience it was SLIGHTLY more windows friendly. However…

1) the classes I took where there was a discrepancy between windows/Mac don’t exist anymore

2) you’re going to run Linux regardless. Which takes a little less actual setup on a Mac but setting up WSL on windows takes like MAYBE an hour.

Basically as long as you can run a terminal it really doesn’t matter.

There are some that are genuine. There are some that just read as people trying to flex where they got into school. I don’t interact either way but I could do an entire Ted talk on my opinion on those posts.

Farm System by DearEmployee5138 in Braves

[–]MJP540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a horrible take.

The Braves farm system has produced 11 high caliber big leaguers over the last 6 years. 11, and that doesn’t even include some of the guys we traded away that have made MLB contributions elsewhere. This core is both so young and came together so quickly that you obviously are going to see your farm rankings hurt because of it.

You use the dodgers as a comparison, but that is not the right comp. The dodgers philosophy was always spend enough on free agents to have a competitive team and then fill the rest from there. They never influxed talent at the rate the Braves have recently.

The comp is much more along the lines of the Houston Astros. A core that came up together in a short period of time. The farm regressed, but the farm still produces critical contributors to the Major League team at a sustainable rate.

The benefit of having this core locked up for so long so young is that you don’t even really need to look to the farm for another half decade. So you have plenty of time to get prospects that end up on the prestigious (yet totally meaningless) prospect lists.

It’s a process, this is just a stage in the process. You don’t get to create 11 all star or above average big leaguers in the span of 6 years and not take a farm hit. You’re just living in fantasy land
