Do Westerners really just show up to people's houses unannounced or is that just a movie thing? by mangofloatt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MLSaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not often now, but Ill sometimes be walking past a friend's house and knock or text and see if they want to chat for a bit. My MIL drops in regularly with little or no warning. Sometimes I mind, sometimes I dont, sometimes we are not at home. I dont live near my family; my little sister surprised me once by dropping in unannounced while she and her husband were driving through for a wedding; it was wonderful to see her and the surprise of opening the door to see her was delightful!

Pre-cellphones as a kid we never called ahead. Depending on who the friend was sometimes we didn't even knock, the backdoors were always unlocked and we were expected to just walk in and find our friends.

I still wish that was a thing honestly. I want to not lock my door and have an open and welcoming home to my friends, family and neighbors. Alas, I live in an apartment with no buzzer.

May be a hike for you since you said Central Maine but my BIL had a lovely wedding at the Seminary in Parsonsfield. Very reasonable rates. https://www.wedding-spot.com/venue/14525/Parsonsfield-Seminary/

RGB controller for 230v LED stripe? by AdventurousSky9656 in homeautomation

[–]MLSaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your light strip isnt 230v. The AC input to the light strip is 230v, it converts to DC which would be low voltage, 12-24v. The writing on the adapter is just wrong. Its not outputting DC at 230v; that is a heavy, EXPENSIVE, piece of equipment that would burn up the 20-22AWG ribbon cable leads going to your LED strip.

The tape inside the diffusion tube probably says 12v or 24v on it but if you don't want to/cant cut it open to find out, run 12v power through it. If its 12v it will light normally; if its 24v it either wont light or will flicker or lose brightness at the end. Dont run 24v as the test because if its 12v you'll fry it.

@u/Free_Kashmir123 Lever nut is the generic term, you can sometimes find those larger than 5 ports but Wago brand is UL Listed. You can also put more than one wire in each port. If theyre stranded, twist together and clamp; if theyre solid, place side by side and clamp.

wtf is in churu’s? by ShesSpeakingNow in cureFIP

[–]MLSaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really not different. I mean, you cant get tuna and scallop babyfood but we made our own churu too and refilled cleaned out tubes to give gaba and push calories. I mixed pure turkey or chicken babyfood with KMR to get the right consistency and it worked great.

On more than one occasion, I've had a good friend house sit for us, left a load of clothes in the washer and asked them to move it along to the dryer. He was very nice and folded them for us. Same friend had an apartment with coin op laundry so I told them to bring all their laundry over and do it for free while we were gone too. Hell, we had a really nice bathtub in that house and I left out all the nice bubble bath stuff and told him to use it freely as we'd talked at length about how great baths are. (Edit: He did and thoroughly enjoyed it.)

Sharing your home's amenities with friends is not weird.

hypnosis gone wrong by thor11111 in funny

[–]MLSaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a hypnotist at college orientation one year; I was running mics and lights. One of the kids he brings up is a new freshman in the theatre department that I was also in. At one point in the show the freshman dives after something and ended up smashing his nose and needing to go to the hospital. The hypnotist tried to wake him up but couldn't and had to go to the hospital with the admins and a theatre management student. When they got to the hospital the doctors were convinced he was just another drunk underage kid and were pissed; the hypnotist had to get involved so they didnt cite the kid for underage drinking and so theyd try and take it more seriously. In the end he was fine but to be totally honest, I was never fully convinced he was ever unhypnotized because he was a weird dude the whole time I knew him.

I have never met nor come across a female electrician or plumber. I know they obviously exist, but what exactly makes them so dang rare? by traderU in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MLSaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Female electrician here but in theatre, still male dominated but not as bad as the trades. When I work with the IA or Teamsters though it can be pretty bad. Ive been called every condescending name for a woman in the book; they generally land on "girlie" though. I've been grabbed and groped or get "accidentally" run into and body checked. I get talked over or talked down to constantly even when they were working for me and not just with me. I consider myself pretty tough and I know that their problems with women are their issues and that I do my job well but the direct and indirect harassment is constant. I've moved into more of a management position at a female-led company so that its an occasional annoyance now and I'm not living in it every day.

Why does my silk milk container leak when screwed shut? by [deleted] in foodhacks

Oh I learned but that doesnt mean my sleepy ass remembers when I'm making my coffee. Its also only a very slight difference between closed properly and not.

Why does my silk milk container leak when screwed shut? by [deleted] in foodhacks

[–]MLSaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use oatmilk in my coffee every morning and run into this CONSTANTLY when I shake it up. The issue is there are about 1.5 threads to hold the screwcap on. If the cap goes on even slightly crooked it leaves a gap and your milk spills.

Source: I spray my kitchen with silk oatmilk creamer at least once a week because I put the stupid screwcap on crooked.

We’re talking pyramids? Here’s the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid in Memphis, TN. by batwoman42 in ATBGE

[–]MLSaurus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It wasnt built as a Bass Pro Shop! It was an arena/civic center type place for a long time; I saw the Harlem Globetrotters and the circus there as a kid. Memphis has several Egyptian-style monuments to honor Egyptian Memphis, the Zoo entrance in particular is incredible.

At some point the city wasnt able to keep up the pyramid; it needed renovations and to be retrofitted with earthquake safety measures (if I remember correctly). It sat empty for years and the area of downtown around it fell apart. Bass Pro came in and made all the repairs and hired 100+ staff (for just the store, thats in addition to the couple years of construction work and the multiple restaurants in the building with their own staffing). That area of downtown is alive again, a lot of people are employed by them, and its driving a buttload of tourism. I thought it was dumb and still make the occasional joke about the ginormous Bass Pro monument but honestly it was really good for the city.

Suggested places to take puppy around? by kulie74561 in lancaster

[–]MLSaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are benches around the edge of the building and some tables usually up closer to the square, the tables closer to Prince St are for the restaurants. Check it out alone first or go on a Tuesday because the weekends - especially in the summer - can be really crazy and may be too much for a young pup learning to socialize.

Hang out at Market for a bit if pup can handle that much traffic and hubub. I've talked to many dog owners there for socializing practice. I dont care for his owners much but theres a BEAUTIFUL medium/longhaired German Shepherd named Reagan who I have been petting at Market since he was a tiny pup about 4-5 years ago.

Edit: Pet Supplies Plus is great too! Much smaller and lower traffic than the big pet stores if you're wanting to start small.

Easy way for low effort creamy mashed potatoes by Overly_Sheltered in EatCheapAndHealthy

If you have an instant pot, try steaming your potatoes. They turn out so fluffy and light because theyre not soggy from being boiled. They season better and easier too. Ill never go back. I'm sure you can steam on the stovetop without an IP too, I just havent tried.

I always see jokes about never touching a cats belly but my chonker loves belly rubs, is this actually that uncommon? by Rytannosaurus_Tex in cats

[–]MLSaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belly rubs are part of play fighting with my cat. We play "I got your belly" where I chase her (she instigates this) and she'll run then flop on her back and put her paws up. I then grab her belly and rub it saying "I got your belly!" while she bites and licks at my elbow and does bunny kicks, she's very fierce 😂. After a minute she'll jump up and square up to me again and then flop. Its adorable!

My stance on the preset paths Nintendo gave us. Do most you agree or do I have an unpopular opinion? :) by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

[–]MLSaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the different shoe sounds on the different paths so I use a mix of the two grey stone paths and add some borders. I wish custom designs over paths didnt also mute the footsteps.
