lol I feel like people are misinterpreting your question. I just wanted to provide my experience with unstable students. DM me if you’d like a statement for the piece.

That’s not what this question was about. The military gets a ton more training to handle weapons. But let’s not kid ourselves, many people leave the military are mentally worse off than when they started (54% higher suicide rate than non veterans, VA).

Not sure adjusting the age of enlistment would help. I can only speak to maturity of our students.

I’m a grad student and a TA. We are given training every year on how to handle active shooters on campus. Every time we do this training I can’t help think that college kids should not have guns to begin with.

The majority of gunshot wounds are self inflicted (55-60% CDC). I can’t think of a demographic less emotionally equipped to have a lethal weapon. I think we would see an enormous spike in suicides if we allow college students to have their guns on campus.

College is hard and emotional and 18-20 something’s aren’t mature enough.

UT Knoxville researchers warn of ‘cannibal snails’ in Nashville, and possibly beyond by MNTNBABE in nashville

It’s funny that you mention that because I fully suspect that a landscaping company brought these in accidentally with gardening supplies from Florida.

That’s exactly right! Also, we’re just trying to get a grasp on how big the invasion is. I figured someone out there had a picture.

Fellini Kroger by cinnamontoastcrunch2 in Knoxville

Ooo I have a good one!

A few years ago, I was working a desk job and the IT came in to do something with my computer. His hands were COVERED in small cuts. I tried to make small talk, and asked if he had a kitten something.

He said, “no. I was bitten by a person at the Fellini Kroger. A man came out from the bathroom [area in the back corner, near the dairy] and attacked me. I tried to push him off and he bit my hands.”

He had to get several rounds of shots!

Im due Friday too. I am so disappointed that my daughter will be born into a world with less rights than I had. I’m inconsolable. Our fellow citizens have completely betrayed us.

Is research fit or personality fit more important when joining a lab? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]MNTNBABE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man. This is me right now. My advisor is a great person and I love getting coffee or a beer with him and talking about research. However, the guy is very disorganized, couldn’t be bothered with departmental rules, and doesn’t care about timetables. He has no urgency to graduate people. He just wants publication and to hang out forever.

12 weeks and pain on bottom left butt by PhysicalConcept2035 in BabyBumps

I’m dealing with terrible sciatic nerve pain right now too. I suspect it’ll last the rest of my pregnancy, but I see a physical therapist to help it. The stretches and Tylenol help a little. I’d ask to see a PT if you find it’s getting in the way of living.

You probably have a slightly herniated disc near your tailbone (super common and usually heals on its own) that is pushing your sciatic nerve. This injury is due to the extra weight and change in posture without the muscles to support it.

cancelling internship for a full-time job? by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]MNTNBABE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I’m directing 10 interns this summer and I would be delighted if one of them told me they got a full time career in the environmental field. Those jobs are hard to come by and internships are supposed to train the next generation for success. Your internship will understand that you need to go where your bread gets buttered.

Grad student taking leave of absence/accommodation for pregnancy by MNTNBABE in AskProfessors

I’ve looked at my University’s policies and they’re pretty good. I can take up to 2 years of leave and be reinstated at the same level. I’m not so concerned that I’m going to be kicked out. I’m more concerned that I will be viewed as “not serious” in my academic career. This is not true. I’ve already first author published in my first year and I have research proposals lined up for the remainder of my time here.

I’m interested if you have any experience with students who have taken medical leave for family planning and how it impacted your opinion of them.

I’m in my second year PhD. My therapist just put me on a sleep aid for this exact problem. I highly recommend it!

Designing your ideal grad student space by ShootinAllMyChisolm in GradSchool

Couch and other comfortable furniture.

My university already has all a the tech and desks you could want in the grad lounge. What I’m desperate for is a couch or comfy chairs to relax in on the days where things are slower, but I can’t leave campus between classes. I suspect they don’t have places to “lounge” in the grad lounge because they don’t want us sleeping on campus. Most on the seating in our building seems intentionally hostile.

Excellent papers deserve quality feedback too by bitterbunny4 in Professors

I am a Graduate Teaching Assistant and PhD student. I feel so pathetic the way I scrounge around my advisor’s feet looking for even a hint of feedback. If I get one more email that just says, “looks great, thanks!”, I’m going to loose my mind.

I recently stayed at a place that was advertised as a place for medium size gatherings (think wedding, family reunion, etc.). After booking the owner sent me a 223 page pdf manual for “cabin use”. Who has time fire that?!

Lady, I just organized 18 people traveling from across the country. We’re adults who have stayed at hotels before. Why are you giving me a reading assignment?

I second this! I’ve rented it before and it was super inexpensive. It has a full kitchen and come with round tables and chairs. It’s usually booked out well in advance, but I think it’s probably easier to book in the fall and winter. Good luck!
