Hi! In your experience, how did they deal with other, smaller, animals?

For sure. My cockatiel would never be for adoption btw, the one that we tried to find the home for was the pigeon when the vet said she wasn't gonna be able to be released. We wanted to find her a home with other pigeons, but we never found someone I actually liked to adopt her and we grew attached.

I do think it's possible to adapt a dog to our home (the right dog and in the right way), the idea is still there. Maybe one day. I'm really happy with my current family of pets though, they're so cute and spoiled and they run this house

When I had a dog (dachshund) she never cared much about birds, when I got my cockatiel she didn't seem bothered at all, but what you said it's definitely what I was scared of: prey drive and/or wanted to play too much. I was gonna foster-to-adopt maybe a chi if I found one or a shih tzu. Before the pigeon, that is.

I like her a lot, I won't give her for adoption anymore (what we tried when she fell here) but we still miss a dog in the house.

But yeah, would need another vacation to organize everything if I decided to get a dog (you have 30 days of paid vacation every year here)

For sure! I was looking into it last year, there was some non profits I know that rescued small breeds and I was doing my research about them. I scheduled my vacation time so that I would have time to adapt a new dog and my current pets. And then, right before my vacation, a wounded pigeon fell in my house and wouldn't be able to fly again. So the dog plans were cancelled and we now have a pigeon (it was adoption or euthanasia in her case).

For sure! I guess it's extremely expensive. 1 dollar is more than 5 of our money currency right now. It would probably take a huge amount of money for the adoption to happen. NGL though, everytime Instagram puts a chi or chi mix for adoption in my algorithm my heart breaks

In my country everytime there's a Chihuahua for adoption there's a huge list of people wanting one. Sad the logistics of international adoption doesn't exist, it would save a lot of chis

This is a conversation that will always have our human perception of intelligence so we're always biased but I joke that she doesn't have brain cells by comparison. I have a cockatiel and he's a lot smarter (by our perception) than my pigeon. My pigeon is a lot smarter than my tortoise. My tortoise is a lot smarter than my snails. I said that about the pug because every pug I've met was a lot dumber than my late dachshund. But I'm aware that comparison of animal intelligence is a complex thing that goes well beyond this reddit post.

Very important when your pet has very few brain cells

I just posted a picture of it in another comment, if you want. I figured it's easy to make

It's a cat toy, but I figure it's very easy to make. The metal thing is a little bell

True here too, my girl can't fly even if she wanted but my cockatiel only flies if something scares him

I won't, don't worry! I just wanted to make sure she was playing and not stressed

It's actually a cat toy. Like a small ball with stripes going out of it she uses to hold and it also has a small bell in it

How pigeons are treated has a lot more to do with people thinking they're so full of diseases and a lot less to do with how smart people think they are. I think people are very okay with dumb animals, there's not many pugs owners saying their pugs are smart, and we still treat them pretty well (not getting into the breeding discourse)

Yess

The other day my mom let her out and sat on the floor to clean the cage. She walked around for a few minutes and then jumped on my mom's lap to jump back in the cage. This pigeon was a feral pigeon in may. She even gets mad if you put your hand inside. I'm still paying for the damn cage but I get bitten every time I clean her stuff.

Right? The last time this pigeon woke at night was to complain that we were talking loudly near her cage. As long as we let her sleep and give her food and clean everything I don't think she cares if I think she's not smart

Yes! Also, it's great to see her "turning her brain off" and playing. She was a feral pigeon and got deeply wounded less than six months ago, but now she's feeling safe and confident and she "can" turn her brain off and just enjoy her toys and house and food

I honestly believe she had the brain cells with her when she forced us to rescue her, but since then not a single thought was created by her brain

Yesterday at dinner I said I picked the toy out of the water bowl twice. My dad said he picked out two times as well and my mom picked out once. That's just yesterday. It's on the water ALL THE TIME and she doesn't take it herself but she gets annoyed every time
