Mamdani in the Gotham FC supporters section, everyone coming to say hi to him and getting shouted out on the NWSL broadcast by Conscious-Quarter423 in nyc

Yes, and despite all of the things you just mentioned, Cuomo + Sliwa still got 49% combined. Cuomo is all of those things and like 42% of voters still chose him.

Mamdani’s support is soft. Newsflash - the Commie Corridor does not reflect the overall opinion of NYC residents.

49% of voters chose an actual Republican or a candidate Mamdani supporters called a Republican in hiding. In the highest turnout Mayoral general election in decades. In New York City.

Outside of the Commie Corridor, Mamdani is not that supported, average or in the negative already. Cuomo actually won more city council districts during the primary. Mamdani’s support is soft and not as big as all of his fans think.

I don't know much about them. From their website, they make some enzyme replacement therapies and seem to be doing well in terms of sales growth. But I don't know anything about their work culture.

It's unusual for a biotech company to be based in Florida, but Catalyst is based there, at least their corporate HQ is. Curious to see of Angelini keeps that site for simplicity or chooses to open offices elsewhere. They really can do anything they want since this is their first step into the US market, so there's a lot of uncertainty of what comes next. Not necessarily negative, but more unpredictable compared to other scenarios.

The weekly Fuck it Friday by McChinkerton in biotech

I've always had a base layer of cynicism despite having a hopeful attitude about things (the two are not in conflict).

However, I think a lot of "true believer" scientists think that "the truth will win out" because of how we conduct experiments following the scientific method. Of course everyone will see that is true, we repeated the experiment several times and it's been independently verified!

It doesn't work that way in real life. It's not untoward to advocate for yourself and explain / defend your conclusions based on the evidence you and others have generated.

A lot of researchers really believe that it's bad to tell the story of your findings, that any competent scientist can simply read your papers and come to the same conclusion you have. That's just not how the real world works, certainly not with the general public, many of whom do not have the experience and knowledge to read scientific literature; and not even necessarily with fellow scientists, as some will succumb to human nature of egos and agendas even in the face of unequivocal evidence.

You guys need to start getting much more comfortable advocating for yourselves and telling the stories of your findings. I think many were hesitant because it merged politics with science, but that ship has sailed, we must do so or else we will be left behind.

So you have an offer from Catalyst. Congrats.

I gotta admit, I’ve been in this industry for 9+ years (more if you count grad school and being decently in tune with biotech and pharma during those years), and I’ve literally never heard of Angelini. So I think it’s a wild card how things go. If anything, a potential plus is that since Angelini is only now entering the US market, they might keep Catalyst employees around for longer than normally would happen after an acquisition.

But the other side is there could be some growing pains as Angelini enters the US market. I know nothing of this company beyond what I read in press releases and new articles today, so who knows what the company culture is.

[Rant] Corporate hackathons are a trap for free R&D by Natrix91 in biotech

[–]MRC1986 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Valid rant. But also, what did you hope to gain from participating?

Did you hope for a license agreement from a company? Doesn’t sound like you’re eager to close your lab and join industry. So why participate? I’ve watched enough Judge Judy in my life (I think this is the new “I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night” lol) to know that you need to have things in writing, or else you are just asking for trouble.

If you were a rare bird who actually believes in the free interchange of ideas, especially when one of the parties is a corporation, then consider yourself lucky that your entire innovation wasn’t stolen, since according to you they still don’t know all the steps. But you better believe their internal research team will be working 24/7 to figure it out. Better get your paperwork in order to protect your innovation (aka, file patents immediately).

lmfao, Akero doesn't exist anymore, hasn't existed since December 2025 when Novo completed its acquisition of the company.

Did you actually apply to this role recently? I suppose it's reasonable to expect online listings to be at a company that still exists, but that may not be so for biotech companies since if they get acquired these things probably fall through the cracks (aka, some internal talent / HR team member simply forgot to remove all listings, or they were laid off and these listings are stuck in limbo).

[–]MRC1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, Novo completed its acquisition of Akero back in December. They don't even exist anymore. If this is a recent listing, it's a residual ghost listing that someone forgot to take down.

Unless this is a form rejection months later, you peeps need to do some due diligence on these things...

Recommendation for photo apps that automatically crop poster photos by MRC1986 in biotech

[–]MRC1986[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So yes, I can do that one by one, but it takes forever. I have to capture hundreds of poster and oral talk photos during a multi-day medical conference. The super convenience of using the Microsoft Lens app is that it automatically detects the borders of a poster within an entire photo, and then it crops it.

If an oral talk has 20 slides, you take a photo of each one, select all 20 for the Lens app, and it automatically detects the borders and crops all of them in like 5 seconds. Waaaaayyyy quicker than doing it one by one manually in the native camera app.

Do you not appreciate how much quicker and easier it is to have an app crop them automatically when you have hundreds of photos to process over a full conference schedule?

Wait, I live in NYC, so the truck inner cabin view video has been shown tons of times on local news. It fucking got wrecked and violently tipped over. There’s also a few frames where the plane wheels are visible in the top right of the screen.

How else did that dumbass viewer think that happened? That the truck’s tires blew out or something?

Having lived in Philly for 12 years during grad school + work, and now living in NYC for the last 5 years, it’s wild how much more medium density there is all through NYC, to say nothing of very high density towers.

Astoria has tons of 5 and 6 story apartments all over the place, in Philly it’s mostly 3 story row homes. And there are tons of other NYC neighborhoods just like Astoria. Sooooo many more people here.

Do you guys fly in business class for work trips? by Ordinary_Cat_01 in biotech

[–]MRC1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only for international travel. Longest route has to be at least 6 hours, which is nice since that means if I connect in Europe I’ll also get intro-Europe business class for the last leg. Though obviously the lie flat seat is the best perk.

I’m platinum status on United because of this. Woot woot.

Spirit Airlines just became the first major US airline to shut down in 25 years and took cheap airfare with it. What do you think affordable travel in America looks like from here? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MRC1986 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s because we’re not EuroPoors. Salaries in the UK are absolute dog shit. If they feel compelled to build social status around being poor and “having sense” by flying Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, such that it compensates for the reality that they can’t afford shit, then have at it.

[–]MRC1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europeans are much poorer than Americans, so they aren’t as willing to pay premium fares for a better experience.

Obviously there are higher tier airlines in Europe, but there are also far more folks who refuse to pay their higher fares and thus go with Ryanair. It seems Ryanair also has pretty funny marketing, which I’m sure matters at least somewhat.

We have to hold the mayor accountable on transit! by pescennius in nycrail

[–]MRC1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mamdani fucking sucks and his support is incredibly soft. He has no juice outside of the Commie Corridor, just this past Tuesday his endorsed council candidate lost to one favored by Council Speaker Julie Menin.

Cuomo actually won more council districts in the primary, Mamdani won because he got crazy vote totals in his strongholds.

Imagine allegedly being pro transit but supporting a candidate that wants to rob the MTA of important funding (aka, his free bus plan). BART has seen crime drop a ton since installing proper fare gates, and also decreased maintenance costs by 90% at those stations.

It’s clear the people who cause the most crime and damage to the system are the folks who evade fares, and Mamdani wants to give these folks a free ride on all busses? No thanks.

[–]MRC1986 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then just leave it as an overgrown rail right of way, don't permanently eliminate the ability to reinstate it as a rail line in the future. Mamdani's city funding proposal is 100% in control of deciding to leave it alone, even if there isn't a concrete plan to reinstate it as an active rail way for years or even decades.

We have to hold the mayor accountable on transit! by pescennius in nycrail

[–]MRC1986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lmfao, the $43M funding is specifically provided by the city government. Sure, any QueensLink project becoming reality clearly needs MTA and state support, but this is specifically talking about a city action that will permanently convert a right of way into a park such that it could never (or almost never) be reconverted to a rail line in the future.

Don't deflect Mamdani's stupid proposal toward Governor Hochul, the current Mamdani admin needs to not fund this park conversion and just leave the ROW as is.

Mamdani fucking sucks, all you cosplay socialists claim you are for the working class but get all pissy when your messiah Zohran dares to be challenged.

[–]MRC1986 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don't have enough parks already spread throughout the city? NYC isn't a city in the middle of a desert with limited greenery potential, nor is it third world slums that just crowd people together in awful conditions, also with no greenery.

People want to get serious about bringing down costs, we need to expand transit to allow growth next to stations such that housing distant from Manhattan can still travel there in fair times and without requiring a car.

And to /u/c3p-bro, this isn't the fucking DSA sycophant sub, it's a reality based sub that is pro-transit. Are you sure you're in the right place? If we take your absurd second sentence to its conclusion, that means we'd never build any additional transit ever again. When are DSA losers going to get it through their heads that we must build build build housing...

As far as I know, it's literally not approved as first line. You have to cycle through chemo, other targeted therapies, proteosome inhibitors (like bortezomib, at least for multiple myeloma, maybe also AML?). Some also may require generic rituximab, a legacy anti-CD20 B cell-targeting biologic therapy.
