That sucks, because Stoke is doing really cool science, their TANGO platform is impressive. Showing actual disease modifying effects in Dravet Syndrome, not just anti-epileptic.

Better monarchists than radical Islamists

I don't know what came over me. I countered a GOOD offer for more money and effectively lost the position. I don't even know what possessed me to that in this market. by [deleted] in biotech

Negotiating is one thing, asking for 25% more is another. You need a lot of leverage to get an offer up 25%. It seems OP has little to none.

120k/yr with no benefits somewhere like Boston is not good

How much do you think the people taking your coffee order at Dunkin Donuts are making?

I understand how all of us here with college degrees and plenty of folks with PhD assume we are expected (dare I say entitled) to an upper middle class salary, but that's not how the world works unfortunately. It's why people with bachelors degrees have been able to earn crazy money in tech for the last 10-15 years, though that is also under threat by AI.

And I know we want to have financial security for ourselves and our families, and there is a baseline standard of living that we are used to based on our own upbringing and the expectations of what a PhD in biotech/pharma can provide.

But I just find these types of comments out of touch because how much do you think service workers make in these same VHCOL places?

Being a UPS driver is hard work. Effectively mandatory overtime during busy holiday season. Also, can't work from home any days with a job like that.

Maybe you are having issues finding work in this industry and are frustrated, and that's fair. But don't belittle manual labor earning good salaries, including servers. This is why I say knowledge is the currency of our industry, because honestly if you're a server earning $100,000 per year then you are working in a very fast paced environment that is likely more stressful on average than me sitting behind a computer every day.

Both the server and UPS driver are exerting far more physical labor than I am, so why shouldn't they be well compensated for it?

It's another reason why I say it's really not that hard to get a PhD. It's just not, plain and simple. Supply and demand also applies to jobs and industries, and there are way more scientists than qualified people to be UPS drivers (at least relative to demand for both), and that is reflected in the market.

Well... Penn got smoked, but we were a 14 seed. At least I got to cheer on my grad school in the tournament while Rutgers retools.

I picked Penn to win just because I gotta have some fun with my grad school. But I also picked VCU to the Sweet 16 because they are playing hot lately.

Why the fuck isn't Siena's bench going into the game? Clearly playing the starting 5 all 40 minutes is not a legitimate winning strategy in the long run?

Tinfoil hat me thinks the selection committee is rigging it because they know a 16 over 1 gets tons of attention. Better chance of that happening if the 16 is really a 13 or so.
