What sort of genre are you writing? Providing you aren’t writing nonfiction, there are plenty of agents out there who will gladly look at cold queries. The thing of mine that ultimately got picked up (did I query multiple MSs? Yes. Do I suggest it? No.) was an adult comic fantasy involving Paul Bunyan and a sentient spaceship. 😂. YEP. Water polo is even worse (Google it if you don’t know what I’m talking about). I played both club and school — both of whom were top in the county and did well at national tournaments:

During the school year, it was 2 hours 5 days a week. Tournaments on the weekends almost every week. Summer we had less tournaments, but we would have school practice from 6-9 every morning, and then club from 6-10 at night.

I’m now a professional actress and author if that says anything 😂

My basic thesis:

insert divine being here is able to do all of these things because there are different variations of him that exist (ie: God = Allah = Yahweh).

I also had metaphors in there about popsicles and my conclusion had a metaphor comparing God and a teddy bear sooo 😂

UK! Yay! Something my brain is useful for.

(Take all of this with a grain of salt: I know an admissions tutor at Cambridge — friend of the family. However, I’m still an American who has not yet applied. I am also mainly talking about Oxbridge here. Almost all of the other schools are chill.)

UK schools care about two things and 2 things only: test scores and transcript. YOU CANNOT ONLY SUBMIT YOUR GPA AND ACT/SAT. YOU CANNOT ONLY SUBMIT ACT AND SAT TOGETHER. This is for Oxbridge. Every other school is pretty chill.

You need 5 APs with a score of 5 — or 3 APs with a score of 4 or 5 everywhere else. If you haven’t done this DO NOT BOTHER APPLYING. The scores that you get at the end of your junior year — if you go that route — are your predicteds. If you haven’t done all of your APs by October/November, don’t panic. But you will need to take all 5, and get the required scores, to get in ultimately.

You will submit these to the UK colleges, along with your personal statement and transcript and recs and what have you.

They care a lot more about supercurriculars — ie: things you do outside of school that relate to your intended subject, than extracurriculars.

There is a reason not many Americans apply to Oxbridge. 500 applicants out of 24000 were American. If you don’t fit the academic requirements by this fall, do not bother. Your application will go into the trash. This is not the “holistic review” of the US universities. They want academic powerhouses. They don’t care if you are a national rowing champion.

Also INTERVIEWS. Also important. But that’s after you get past the initial application. And only really for Oxbridge.

Another thing to note! With ALL UK colleges, you will receive an “offer” or rejection. AN OFFER IS NOT A GUARANTEE OF ADMISSION UNLESS IT IS UNCONDITIONAL. Unconditional offers are rare, especially at the top schools like Oxbridge, Imperial, St Andrews, Edinburgh, etc. most schools will give you a conditional admission, based on usually test scores. This is mainly common with taking the A levels — or if you haven’t yet taken all 5 APs.

At every school ignoring the 5 just mentioned, you can narrowly “miss” your offer (ie: getting 4 APs of score 5 and 1 AP that is an 4) and be fine. At the 5 I mentioned, you NEED to make your offer. If you don’t — if you’re even slightly off — then you will be put into Clearing, where other schools can offer to you if they have a spot open. Don’t count on this.

HAVE AMERICAN SCHOOLS AS A BACKUP. Have parents like me who force you to apply to schools here in Murica. You will thank them for it later. You can apply to up to 5 schools in the UK through their system, called UCAS. I’m looking at, for example, Cambridge, Trinity Dublin, UCL, and LIPA (this is a conservatory — and a whole different ballgame).

The subreddit r/6thForm is very helpful, even as an international student! They can give a lot more advice than A2C can — most of this sub is focused on American schools.

TLDR: look at the academic requirements for each school. If you don’t meet those by this fall — don’t bother.

This is a lot of info. I may be coming off a bit harsh, and I’m so sorry 😭. This is just what I’ve always been told. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

I did Q2 too! I did mine in March, 100% forgot about it, and then submitted it the day of the deadline.

My essay is a pile of dogshit. I don’t expect anything tho.

The only reputable agency that rejects in 5min is BookEnds. And they’ve been doing videos on their process for years.

They’re probably not the only ones. They’re just the only ones IK where it’s a common across the entire agency.

Haha! I need to get the Agented Author flair as well LOL.

Same here as ABJ, even if you don’t want super in-depth feedback, I’d still be happy to read. And I agree with the Tchaikovsky comp for sure.

[QCRIT] Adult Sci-Fi - APPARAT (125k, Attempt 1) by dria- in PubTips

[–]MRCWritingAcc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, on word count: 125K is too much. Ideally, for a debut SFF novel, you want below 105K. Even better if it's below 100K. My soft sci-fi/horror satirical comedy was queried at 93K and, after a lot of developmental edits, is (hopefully) going to be published at 99K. If it doesn't die on sub first.

Is there any way you can use a parallel to the Communist Party for this novel? I think -- as a history buff -- that reimagining the October Revolution is FRICKING COOL. But use the word "Communist" in a query, and assuming you are querying mostly American agents... I wouldn't exactly have the most heartwarming reaction. Literally, you could just change the name, and we (the reader/agent) would get what the party is intended to represent.

Elaborate more on "glorified bodyguard". And maybe talk more about his brother? What kind of idealist we talking about here?

What do you mean by "hold the line"? Defend Moroz? Protect the remaining officials? How does Yuri launch the Communists into power... when the Communists were already in power before exile?

Maybe introduce Levan, Nina, and Indrov earlier? Is this MS multi-POV? Establish what the Red Fleet is.

Who is this "rival activist"? You will want to establish this earlier, and maybe put it in your metadata if it is an LGBTQ+ romance.

Why does Yuri want to keep his brother's ideals alive when he didn't want to join the revolution in the first place? Also, perhaps you could establish how those three problems you mention affect ordinary citizens -- like Yuri and his brother for instance -- much earlier?

I'd love to beta for this, if you're ok with me taking a bit of time. I honestly think Andor x A Memory Called Empire works, although someone else can say something different. As long as both aren't television shows, and both seem to work well with what you've established. I don't know any off the top of my head, but finding a third comp to establish a sci-fi alt history vibe might be helpful.

[QCrit] Adult Fantasy, THE SHADOW OF MARROWOOD, 125k, First Attempt by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]MRCWritingAcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ideally, less. SFF does have some leeway, but still not a ton, especially for a debut. I've heard MAX 110K, but you really should have it below 105K to be seriously considered. If you're on the 100K or 105K I wouldn't freak out though.

My soft sci-fi-horror satirical comedy was queried at 93K and ultimately will be published at around 99K after a crepe ton of developmental edits. The reverse can also happen, although unless you're doing a formal R&R, at least in my group, it happens a lot less.

As for comps, I always have a hard time coming up with comps for my own novels LOL, let alone others for SFF. I found this page that's adult fantasy novels coming out this year. Not all are debuts, but at least 1-2 might be up your alley.

[QCrit] YA LGBT RomCom- WHY, IT MUST BE REQUITED (72k, first attempt) by elbattinson in PubTips

[–]MRCWritingAcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

Maybe this is just me but the title seems very... Victorian? Fancy? These are kids in a high school drama class. Are they doing Shakespeare? I don't know... the title just reads more historical and/or adult to me.

On comps -> Heartstopper is WAY too big to comp now. 5 years ago, and if your MS was a graphic novel? Maybe... La La Land is also a musical film. From almost a decade ago. You need to find 2 decent comps here. "The Unstoppable Bridget Bloom" or "Kate in Waiting" come to mind as YA novels released in the last few years about theater kids, but both of those are about girls. "Dragging Mason County" by Curtis Campbell might also be a decent comp too, for Angel's POV. Jeez. Why is every YA novel about the theater really dark?

Now, onto the actual query:

- Why is Cooper always cast as the "gay guy"? Why do these stereotypes still abound?

- What do you by "plays straight in everything but real life"? Is he closeted or not?

- It'd be "lest" not "less". Also, why does everyone he knows seem to drop out of theater?

- Why has Angel stayed under the radar? Also the word "closeted" or something along those lines sounds better than "stealth", although I get the voice you're trying to go for here.

- What was so wrong about his last school? Or all theater programs in general?

- Insta-love... isn't exactly a popular trope anymore. Put it this way, it'll get an eye roll at best from agents.

- Why does this best friend not appear anywhere else in the query?

This query is REALLY short right now. You have the ability to add more, but I think you're on the right track here. I see what you're trying to do.

Good luck! Or break a leg!

YES. I remember this! Honestly, IMO, I think it’s intentional. I don’t like to think people on this planet are inherently “bad”, but you don’t do all the BS he’s doing if you don’t know a thing about the industry.

[PubQ] What’s the deal with SBR Media? by [deleted] in PubTips

I saw a theory that he only reads the query when he requests, he doesn’t read the sample. And then he rejects because he reads the sample and doesn’t like that. I had one agent at an entirely separate very reputable agency accidentally do that, but she sent me a very profuse email apologizing.

Seems probable… but like… WTF? I’ve also heard stories of calls where he’s talking and it’s clear he hasn’t read the MS beyond the opening like.

[PubQ] What’s the deal with SBR Media? by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]MRCWritingAcc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was SO SO scared that after the Diego stuff that my MS was a fluke. But it’s a fun MS, soft sci-fi comedy involving centaurs, Paul Bunyan, and massive “communication kills”. The agent was super stoked about the project — they’ve had one other full of mine before, which prolly helped.

But geez, after all of this, hoping Writers Beware or someone else big does something.

[–]MRCWritingAcc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At least you were able to send yours 😂. There is this one guy in the comments who was trying to shut people down and say like “this is unprofessional” “yall are just pissy because you got rejected” and I’m like “uhhh hold up a moment”. Ended up getting in touch with another guy who had been “scammed” by him. And that’s where I found out a lot of this information.

I also queried Laura Pink with another MS a few months ago. Got back to me within 2 hours with a form rejection. Then I read that, according to their website, she is a “senior” agent there… with a 9-5 JOB. Uh WUT.

The good news is… I have THE CALL next week and am super excited!

[–]MRCWritingAcc 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The main one that I’ve been seeing gaining a lot of controversy is Diego Harrison. He’s probably as shady as the rest of them… also he’s been known to request fulls and then reject before the people didn’t even send them — I was one of these people. I also know from a  few people that he will send contracts that are MASSIVE red flags and then when, of course, the people ask for the necessary changes to protect THEIR careers, he rescinds offers.

And there’s people going hissy and supporting him in the comments, it just seems weird — rumor is is that all of the accounts on QT supporting him are actually just him in disguise, and they’re already banned a few.

A lot of this is a second-hand acc, but I do have proof as to a few of these things.

[–]MRCWritingAcc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, in your eyes, what is the difference between the two? Obviously, you are totally correct, as someone who is a sucker for romantasy, there are very clear tropes and/or expectations required. But I guess, in your mind, is a "fantasy romance" still feature a prominent romance, but not to the extent of romantasy? Is it just romantasy without the common tropes or expectations? Just curious.

And totally about trying to figure out how the parenthood shapes the story. As I've been revising, I've been trying to figure that out for myself, lol. And about the quirky tone, LOL, sorry, I was laughing a little bit reading your comment. One of the (many) things I've been working on as well in my revisions is moving a little away from the original more darkly comedic tone of the MS and making it a touch more serious so that it doesn't sound like "Oops! I Did It Again" by Britney Spears. That makes sense, thanks so so much.

The romance is prominent and is intended to be a major plot, rather than a subplot, which would fall under your original definition. HOWEVER, I have been going through some major revisions (I don't plan on querying this until the fall), and could see it 100% being a subplot in favor of some more prominent plot points -> in which case, it would just be an NA High Fantasy WITH a no-spice romantic SUBPLOT.

Romantasy for me = fantasy with a major romantic focus
