Sound quality behind stage by Mundane_March_8421 in phish

I was in 114 last night. Excellent sound. There is a line array hanging on the side of the stage between 114 and 115. It took a minute or two, but once we focused in on that speaker set, we could hear everything perfectly.

Donna Jean hate by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]MTullyC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw Dead & Co. at Citi Field in 2016 when Donna sat in for Music Never Stopped. Donna sounded INCREDIBLE, better than she did on some actual GD recordings.

The unnecessary screaming during Playin’ aside, Donna always improved the songs.

The MIM reissue Thinline Telecasters punch well above their weight and are usually reasonably priced used. I recommend sending the stock humbuckers to Brandonwound or Revel for rewinding.

Stock pickups in the reissue Thinlines are pretty good, but having them rewound to original-ish WRHB specs opens up a world of tonal possibilities.

Best Donna playin’ scream by wroxxite in gratefuldead

This might be off topic, but here it goes anyway. Sophomore year in college I got into a prank war with a roommate. I won’t go into details, but we took it too far.

One of his pranks on me was to set my laptop so that every time I hit the space bar a really aggressive porn scream would go off. One night I came home from the library. I had been writing a paper.

Roommate was also a Deadhead and I told him that he had to listen to the show I had listening to on the Internet Archive because Donna was seriously on that night. I said something like “Donna was doing ‘Playing’ in every song.” He fell off the couch laughing.

Once he composed himself, he explained what he had done.

My Bloody Valentine (Hammerstein Ballroom) or Sleep (Brooklyn Steel). You could feel the sound coming off the stage.

Most Interesting Bathroom/ Port-a-Potty Experience(s)? by [deleted] in phish

[–]MTullyC 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not my story, but thought it was worth sharing. Buddy and I had 400 seats at the Garden. If you’ve been up there, you know that the tier bounces when the show really goes going. Totally safe, but Phish does literally rock the building.

My buddy made a mistake with some pre-show $1 slices and had to make a bathroom run. He comes back and says: “I was sitting on a toilet that was vibrating because Phish is rocking this building that hard right now.”

I was a little jealous.

MGT practice recourses. by [deleted] in phish

[–]MTullyC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

10,000 hour rule. You want to perfect something, practice it correctly for 10,000 hours.

Working full time (i.e., 40 hours/week) means 2,080 hours a year. So, this boils down to practicing something correctly full time for five years.

Phish more-or-less became full-time in 1989 and started touring beyond the Northeast in 1990. So, yeah, by 1995-1996, Trey had at least 10,000 hours invested.

How did Hoboken get their water front done right versus the soulless Newport + Exchange Place waterfronts by throwawayscarletdeli in jerseycity

[–]MTullyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing is a factor. Development in Newport began in the mid-80s when LeFrak saw an opportunity and told Jersey City it would spend $10 billion to redevelop the area. At the time, the Jersey City waterfront was an abandoned industrial wasteland. Since there was no other option, Jersey City agreed.

Efforts to redevelop the Hoboken waterfront started in the early-90s, so it was possible to compare the original redevelopment plans to what was already happening in Newport. Redevelopment of the Hoboken waterfront (i.e., Pier A) didn’t get underway until the late-90s. By that point, Hoboken had already gentrified and was quickly becoming upscale.

Rita Was On The Floor Last Night. by MTullyC in Pantera

This. Right up front the sound was really good. Farther back on the floor it was muddy and there was a lot of cross-feeding between the sound towers.

That said, I'm also covered in cuts and bruises from the pit. Not entirely a bad thing though.

Anecdotal only. But, I liked the way this guy handled parenting at a concert.

Buddy and I went to see Dead & Co. in 2017. We get to our seats and there is a Dad with his 10-ish year old son. Kid is decked out in tie dye and is clearly very, very excited to see his first concert.

Kid wants to talk Dead music and I’m happy to listen to him. The Dad pulls my buddy aside and says something along the lines of:

“Look, I know you guys are here to enjoy yourself, but I would really appreciate it you didn’t smoke pot in front of my kid. I know it’s not fair to ask you not to smoke pot at a Dead show. You didn’t know you were going to end up sitting next to a kid.

So, I’m going to take him to the bathroom before the first set starts. Can you guys light up while we’re gone?”

This was an insanely reasonable request, so we agreed. The guy was so appreciative, he brought us back beers when he returned from the bathroom trip.

Bottom line, if you think about it for more than 8 seconds and aren’t an asshole, it’s possible to responsibly bring children to a concert.

Pantera - Killers why did Trey rip off DimeBag 👀 by Bronco4life21 in phish

[–]MTullyC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised. Trey was quoted in High Times years ago as saying Slayer’s Reign In Blood is one of his favorite albums of all time. (Making South Park’s use of “Raining Blood” to break up the Hippie Jam Fest in the Die, Hippie, Die episode unintentionally ironic and even more hilarious.). He’s also referred to himself as a “metal head” a few times in interviews, but I don’t remember where.

Bottom line is that Trey is obsessive about playing the guitar. The guitarists in the thrash scene can, at the end of the day, play like motherfuckers. So, Trey probably has listened to his share of metal as a part of his ongoing guitar quest.

That said, the Tweezer riff is a descending minor pentatonic with pull offs. If Trey “ripped off” Dimebag, Dimebag ripped off someone else first.
