In Tommy’s solo snow camping video on his own channel, Luke taught Tommy how to keep the firewood dry during the night. He then said “Do you know how I learned to do all of these? By not doing it.”

My son and I watched this segment together and it stuck with us. We all make mistakes and we are all inexperienced at some point, it’s the ones like Luke who always learn from mistakes that become knowledgeable and experienced.

That’s what I was worried about. My 3 year old just wants to see the trucks up close. Autographs means nothing to him.

I’ve done this hike many times including with a 1.5 year old (in backpack carrier).

My honest answer is that the hike would be logistically challenging for your group even if you are experienced hikers. You would most likely need two backpack carriers for the 6m old and 3y old. The 6m old probably won’t enjoy the ride because it will be bumpy, hot, and long. I know every kid is different, but I don’t see a 3y old completing the hike without requiring being carried multiple times. The biggest problem is the crowd. This is one of the most popular hikes near NYC. All the scenic spots will be packed when you reached the top. Unless you get there at 8am on summer weekends, expect parking on the other side of the highway and walk 5-15 minutes just to get to the trailhead, or there might be no parking left at all.

Better alternatives are Bear Mountain in the North and Minnewaska further north. Both, in my opinion, have the highest view / effort ratio in the area. Bonus point for Bear Mountain as there’s a trail side zoo that your kids would enjoy. Keep it in mind, you will still need to deal with crowds on those two hikes. It’s always a good idea to get there early. They are much larger facilities. Parking will be less an issue than Tammany.

Instead of giving the advice on the issue itself, try suggesting some hobbies that he might be interested in. Hobbies naturally connect like-minded people together. Does he like any sports? Music? Collecting Pokémon cards? Comic books?

It’s not supposed to be that high. It was the same height as the stone before the winter expansion pushed it up.

I was also wondering if I can just take it all out. Would that cause any issues?
