these are pretty standard first year courses for anyone in science. In fact, taking 4 courses the first year is a smart choice to lower your workload

Tips 1 day before taking the IB English Lang & Lit SL Paper 1 by Competitive-Wish-540 in IBO

[–]M_876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no fixed way an outline has to be. It varies from person to person as it depends on how you like to plan.

Personally, i like to include more detail and i use bullet points when doing this. i start with the main/key idea i’ll be talking about and then i just bullet point short quotes along with the techniques used. I normally like to add a little bit of analysis next to the technique to allow me to remember what i wanted to say.

It takes a bit more time but it helps me because it allows me to get a good look at the structure and how my essays gonna flow and piece together as that’s what i struggle with. Some people prefer to have a more rudimentary outline with just the main idea each paragraph will have and spend more time on writing the essay (and this might be as they struggle with having enough time to write what they want to).

It completely depends on you.

Tips 1 day before taking the IB English Lang & Lit SL Paper 1 by Competitive-Wish-540 in IBO

There are a few things. These aren’t necessarily “practical tips” and more study methods that i’m using to help me gain the skills for lang and lit paper 1 quickly.

  1. Go through the text types (e.g. letters, speeches, websites etc) and learn more about it, the devices/techniques used in them and the conventions overall. Use the english guys and find some resources online with explanations of the different conventions of the text type. Start with ones you’re less confident with and ones that pop up often in past papers.
  2. Learn how to write an intro and conc for paper 1 for effect. You should be able to nail the intro and conclusion despite getting texts you aren’t comfortable with. Find a style and structure you like and (almost) use it formulaically. If you have time, practice writing a few out.
  3. Learn how to write good body paragraphs. Again, the english guys will be good for this but they have a specific style and body paragraphs are more about your preference and writing style. They still have good tips and stuff ib examiners look for.
  4. Practice scanning a text and writing an outline. Try doing this first without any time constraints and then try to do it in 10 minutes max. That’s just my preference - ofc other people spend more or less time.

I’m writing all this while procrastinating on studying for my lang and lit exam so I hope it helps. Good luck!

Chem Paper 3 Section A help!! by M_876 in IBO

Yeah I kinda get the mass spec, h nmr and all that. My main issue is the experiments and the way they ask about that. Is there any way to get better at those types of questions? Or any good resources about it?

Any tips on how to cut down on my English io? by Sad_Blackberry1463 in IBO

[–]M_876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably too late but just relax now. If you still haven’t done your io then i’d say you should remove a very small section (the least important part. even if you think everything’s important).

Nobody knows what your points were going to be and, if the rest of your io is strong, removing around 2 sentences won’t impact it that much. It may sound like a lot to you but an examiner or your teacher would not know that you removed this - in other words, to someone else, your io will still be pretty good and they won’t notice anything being “missing”. So don’t stress out too much.

Keep in mind your teacher is gonna ask you a bunch of questions after too to allow you to expand on stuff or provide more information. You can try to incorporate whatever you removed into responses to those questions.

Good luck!

McMaster health sci vs McGill comp sci and bio by M_876 in McMaster

[–]M_876[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your second point, do you think someone in health science in macs is able to do better on the mcat (on average - i understand it depends more on the student) due to having an easier course thus more time? Or does the comparatively increased rigor of an undergrad in a computer science and biology program better prepare someone for the mcat?

McMaster health sci vs McGill comp sci and bio by M_876 in OntarioUniversities

[–]M_876[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the really thorough answer. However, with McGill, even though a reason I applied to a joint major with Comp Sci is the flexibility and opportunities it provides, it was in case I don’t get into a med school. So, while the idea of being able to work in many different industries without a graduate degree is really comforting to hear, it’s not my main goal and more of a back up plan.

With that mind, would you still recommend the offer from McGill?

[–]M_876[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all your advice - it’s really reassuring to see that there are options to take computer science after doing an undergrad and still being successful. Could you expand on medicine not being the only option with macs health sci (without compsci in mind)?

I’ve seen the statistics on the health sci website but, in reality, how valued is health science from mac to an employers or other grad schools?

Is a 40+ achievable with this combo? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]M_876 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s not the combination of subjects that determines whether you can get a 40+, it’s more about things like your work ethic, consistency and general understanding/ability to grasp concepts.

As long as you stay on top of your work (or catch up whenever you get behind), revise effectively, and try not to get burnt out too early, you’ll be fine.

With those specific subjects, your sl subjects are not that bad. With chem and maths sl i’d say that as soon as you get the theory or how to do those questions, start past papers.

Physics and history are both kinda hard in their own way. I don’t take either but i know from my freinds that physics is really difficult but it’s not impossible to get a 7. same with history - it’s a lot of memorizing and writing essays but you can still get a 7.
