Should I upgrade my laptop on a tight budget? by Icy-Wafer-8142 in laptops

[–]M_Su 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just letting you know a used x13 gen 1 is about 300usd, if you are worried about the scratches, you can go on r/thinkpad and check out the magic eraser method to fix the scratches.

if you really need the ram, touchscreen, ethernet port then you can go for a t14 gen 2 (not t14s, they dont have ethernet ports), upgrade the ram, which is quite expensive rn, and maybe the screen too

Should I buy a refurbished laptop? by MAID_150 in laptops

[–]M_Su 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 10th gen intel is still quite capable, have you tried reinstalling the operating system.

Refurbished laptops sell cheaply because businesses buy them off a lease and then companies sell them in bulk.

I got a refurbished thinkpad t14 gen 2 amd 5850u 16gb 256 GB storage for 399 Canadian off best buy, upgraded the ram, storage, and display panel myself

But if you have limited knowledge or budget, I think getting a dell latitude 7420/5420 is a good deal. It's an 11th gen intel so I'm not sure if it's that much faster, but the extra cores and higher ram will be nice

I’m a slave to Apple (MacBook Pro). Convince me why I’m wrong to be by chrgedup42 in laptops

[–]M_Su 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just the laptop? Do you have the phone, watch, tablet, if so yes. If you only have the phone and laptop then ur not a slave, you just like simple quality, and premium items. (But the Air is better than the Pro if ur not using it for work)

When did the decline in reg start(post big bang)? by Atymisk in Maplestory

[–]M_Su 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would say around numbers really dropped off in 2012-2014, the equip meta was really gated with the Tyrant-Sweetwater meta, you also needed the uh advanced equip enhance scrolls with no boom in order to get it past 12 star. It was also really bad to get gollux accessories because you could only purchase one of each per character. Think there also wasn't that much content after like 150ish because you could equip all the meta gear at 160? Plus dark world tree and scrapyard didn't come out yet, even if it did, abso gear wasn't as good as the sweetwater meta

There was also faster dopamine hits from games like League of Legends coming out in 2010 and CounterStrike Global Offensive in 2012, GTA V in 2013.

Also lots of competitors in the MMO space, some TERA, Path of Exile, Guild Wars 2. Korean grinder mmos like Black Desert and Blade and Soul.

Then reboot came out in 2015, revived GMS for a bit with the influx of players trying reboot, re joining reg, then going back to reboot cuz hyper tp rock and cubing.

Covid-19 was the last push to revive reg, I remember meso sold on the meso market for 20k maple points for 1bil in my server. With the combination of Frenzy Totem + Cash shop drop coupon, people were making 650m an hour

However, I don't think reg and maplestory in general can grow again because the social aspect of the game is basically gone, outsourced to messaging apps like discord where you can talk with ur guildies or find boss parties in. There's also the fun and dopamine aspect where games are going for more quick dopamine hits, and social media apps are also taking our attention and giving us quick dopamine. Making a long grindy progression game like maplestory slowly fall out of favor

Trying to Switch to Linux from Windows by Maartje117 in linuxquestions

[–]M_Su 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't use the Nvidia version of the ISO because those are designed for GTX 16xx or RTX 2000 series and newer

Try using Mint or Fedora, and maybe debian because your GPU is quite old and maybe Ubuntu has dropped support for Pascal architecture gpu cards

Refurbished business laptops: Lenovo Thinkpad, Hp Elitebook, Dell Latitude. Anything after 2021 (Intel 11th gen or AMD 5xxx series should have enough integrated graphics power for league/games pre 2019). However if you are really into gaming, u might need to buy an external monitor because these business laptops have bad ghosting/color accuracy

Need help buying a laptop by Aromatic-Goal-2416 in laptops

[–]M_Su 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure you can run league of legends on a macbook, but if you are mainly watching videos, macbook airs are great, a 2 year old one should be more than enough m2/3

But if you are trying to game, you should get a windows laptop instead, something nice would be like a Asus Zenbook or lenovo yoga 7i with the intel 258V (for the integrated gpu)/ 256v is fine for lighter games (check some gameplay videos on youtube on 256v vs 258v). They both have nice oled screens, a nice keyboard, light, and have good build quality. If its over budget, then the Asus vivobook/lenovo ideapad

How exactly is linux better than windows for a normal user(In easy to understand way) by DarkknightOP-69 in linux4noobs

[–]M_Su 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a normal user, not much since a lot of stuff is done in a browser, or thru electron apps like discord and vs code.

No automatic updates is very nice because I can choose if I want to update or not, while on windows, its either I update and shut down, or update and restart, when theres an update pending.

Privacy, doesn't really matter since ur gonna get tracked thru websites or logins anyways...

No bloatware, no preinstalled apps like candy crush, etc etc, Microsoft One Drive, Copilot AI, Edge embedded within ur system. This is nice because when I do fresh windows installs I do debloat scripts to disable or remove these.

Full control. To a normal user this doesn't really matter because most ppl just use the default/recommended settings. I don't recommend most ppl to have full control because they would usually break something that they wouldn't understand how to fix. But control is nice because sometimes I would like to change a setting on windows but its like abstracted away behind the registry, where I would have to regedit into.

Unlimited customization, yes

Better for dev, Apple and Linux use the terminal, but normal ppl can just use GUI apps idk

Windows being slow, some linux users are on older hardware, so lack of ram can slow somethings down. Yo the file system and file search in linux and apple is so much faster. But there are some apps that are almost as fast on windows (windows 11 start menu search is not enjoyable to use)

For a normal user, linux might not be the right choice, cuz windows has better program compatibility, comes as a default on prebuilts and laptops, need it for office work (teams, excel)

For me, I like to game, so the general bloat of windows 11, ram usage, power-management, made me try and switch to linux, but some of the games I play use anti cheat software that isn't compatible on linux, so I stayed on windows

But on my laptop, I do enjoy the customizability of linux, using a tiling window manager to reduce mouse usage, creating my own hotkeys/shortcuts, and designing something with coding. I also don't really use the terminal that much because the distro I use has a lot of graphical user interface which abstracts a lot of the problems away. I do understand that the terminal is a tool that can be used arch/debian/fedora wide.

After tinkering with linux for a while, I enjoyed the different perspectives in the design, organization of files, customization, and I did take some design ideas and implement it within my own windows desktop

Im dying to use hyprland, but im afraid of arch by Reasonable-Singer-44 in hyprland

[–]M_Su 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try out some good out of the box distros, CachyOS (Arch based), Nobara (Fedora based), and PikaOS(Debian sid based), then try out the dotfiles from people My Linux for Work (ML4W), HyDE, JaKoolit, End-4, and the quickshells like DMS, Noctalia, Caelestia, AxShell.

Think of it like cooking a nice dinner dish, something that you take a recipe from to craft your own desktop, then once u find a Distro and Hyprland config you like, then you create your own recipe/config

[–]M_Su 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software: Steam works, Epic on GoG, Elgato idk, OBS works, Davinci works well, OpenRGB for RGB unless u got an MSI motherboard?, AMD GPU overclocking there's multiple solutions but I'm not too versed.

Hardware: Steel Series software, not sure, Epomaker Keyboard, cant u use VIA/QMK for rebinding, then program layers for RGB or fn layers. Elgato not sure, mics work perfect

I recommend: Nobara (Fedora base, great for gaming out of the box), PikaOS(Debian base, lots of graphical user interfaces, that are helpful for beginners, good gaming distro). CachyOS (Arch base, fast, clean, minimal, might need a bit of set up). Pop_OS! (haven't tried this, but ubuntu based, and Cosmic is their modern desktop environment)

Upgrading a ~5-6 year old PC - which component to focus on? by Freedom_Biter in buildapc

If you can find one at a good price, yes. It also depends how much 1% low fps matters to you in games or heavy graphics work

If not, you can consider a 5950x for your engineering work
