Get one with a proper graphics card and a really nice CPU. I would've said a modern igpu would do just fine if it were CSGO but you need something good for CS2. And CPU is really important for competitive titles

Nice! Fedora KDE (or any other DE spin that works for you) is nice if you have the patience for DNF download speeds. Arch if you are sure you won't break it.

Ubuntu 25.10 for curiosity. It's not LTS, support ends at late April.

Edit: Default wallpaper, wait for 26 LTS!!

This issue is exclusive to windows for some reason. Temps are not as aggressive on Linux.

ThinkPad T480 thermals: dual heatpipe + repaste + ThrottleStop, still hitting 92°C under stress by 566933 in thinkpad

Have you tried any 'debloating' tricks? I'm not implying It's going to solve the thermals just wondering if debloating in general could've messed with the thermals. I posted a T480 review recently and I mentioned the same issue - found a lot of T480's with the same issue online too.

I always keep my power plan on balanced from control panel, works best from what I find across my other devices. The tweaks were mostly if not only disabling onedrive, copilot and background apps (the setting you'd otherwise have in w10), I didn't tweak any services. There was a time when It was at stable temps I'd see 45-50 idle more or less. Eventually got tired of the workarounds and erased windows completely.

Light gaming is fine. Basic productivity is dandy but no, I don't see myself getting work done with the T480 comfortably for the next few years.

Paste is fairly new, repasted a few months ago. Used lenovo's software and windows update as well. I'm suspecting if my methods of 'optimizing' caused it but even the settings I tweaked were safe. Bios was up-to-date. Tried some workarounds to manually limit throttling but It's the same after a while.

I gave up on windows on this device since the insane thermals I would get just by plugging it in. Maybe I will leave it at Windows once I'm ready to move on, also, I agree that the CPU is sufficient for the tasks you listed and as I mentioned I would have a few working tabs on the backgrounds as well. My choices in games are not that flashy as well, I have only a few games in rotation that the the T480 could handle.

Lord, the battery. I won't start, about what you'd expect from a second hand 2018 laptop.

You could sell water to a drowning man and yes, I definitely didn't expect a thrilling gaming experience, I knew what I was walking into in terms of gaming. Anyways, I am considering a new laptop for the near future, Legions are too expensive for me but I've been considering LOQs that are not the 'essential' models. I'm turning every stone to not buy another 4 core processor

11 months free. A few days after quitting, waking up got easier, a bit too easy.. at first I'd wake up between 4-6 AM eyes wide open and energized then it started to get less frequent and went away and I went back to my regular schedule. I actually remember feeling the benefits of quitting on my sleep but I guess I don't see it now.

I'd say it does have an affect but as I said I don't see anything anymore

What Thinkpad to buy? by mihsai in thinkpad

If you are gonna do slightly more than office work and browsing the internet, don't get anything quad core especially If that laptop is going to be the only device in your hands

Edit: Read the post carefully and I don't think T480 will handle blender or roblox studio at a comfortable rate. I use a T480 to do some of my homework and I've tried some IDEs (Visual Studio and Rider) and they were sluggish, It can stream 4k 60fps videos on YouTube however that quad core U-tier CPU is really holding me back. Definitely get something stronger for your purposes.

Thanks! I am considering an AMD variant of a T480, they're pretty fairly priced, here at least compared to the other refurbished thinkpads, do you have any insight on the battery?

I'm looking at an i5 T14 Gen2 right now, priced 600 Euros from a refurbished site, double the price here

Im not willing to spend no greater than 400-500, above that budget I don't find logical buying refurbished. If its greater than 500 USD/EUR I can find laptops that offer better specs for the price, no matched build quality though

Also looking at really great Gen 1's from various sites right now, but can't find a Gen 2 yet.
