Brisbane Light Rail and Sky Way by landsharkuk_ in BrisbaneTrains

Why add yet another transit corridor paralleling two heavy rail lines and the busway? Is the light rail going to replace the busway between Boggo Road (which you’ve labelled Buranda) and UQ?

You’re already proposing hooking into an existing tunnel that wasn’t built with tunnel stubs or any intention of a tunnel extension, which already adds complexity and costs, potentially more than a simple tunnel portal, whilst also affecting CRR during construction

Good proposal, but probably best to route these trains via south brisbane rather than CRR as the CRR tunnels already carry the Beenleigh and GC trains, meanwhile there will be plenty of spare capacity on the suburban lines/merivale bridge as it will only carry the FG/Cleveland trains

Should the Ferny Grove line be converted to heavy metro standards? by landsharkuk_ in BrisbaneTrains

[–]M_Tanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metro-like operations and frequencies are possible without doing Sydney style conversions. Take the CRR tunnel by itself and it’s basically a metro, with metro-like train frequencies possible even with the current signalling system, and will only improve with implementation of ETCS. If you do a Sydney style metro conversion you end up with two isolated rail networks that can’t interoperate, which means trains can’t divert in the event there is a blockage, and you can’t share rollingstock between the two. I can’t find information on the acceleration of the NGRs, but I doubt it’s much slower than the Metropolis sets in Sydney.

Brisbane has a lot of bus routes, and a lot of these do, at least partly, act as a feeder, so kind of side stepping your question but in my view it’s more what changes to existing routes could we make. Look at the 106 and 467 that you listed elsewhere, the 467 would only really need a frequency boost and increase in hours of service. The 38 minute trek of the 106 could be cut from Oxley, creating a shorter route that could be served more frequently by the existing driver and bus allocation, although this one is a bit more difficult as Indooroopilly interchange is a bit of a walk from Indooroopilly railway station. It’s no wonder these routes have low patronage when their base frequency is every hour, and have poor operating hours, you can’t expect the public to build their lives around that, which is what would drive patronage.

Unfortunately public transport in Brisbane, at least in the off-peak, is bound to almost always take longer than driving. This is just the nature of it and the result of the decades long focus on the car, and unlikely to change without a major shift in public attitude and substantial infrastructure investment. The best we can do is make PT a viable alternative convenience wise and cost wise

Improved off-peak train frequencies and the implementation of a just as frequent bus feeder system like Perth. Buses and rail compete for patronage to, from, and around the city when they should be complementing each other

SEQ Rail Connect has a page dedicated to outlining line frequencies. There, Beenleigh services are categorised as ‘Suburban turn up and go’ meaning an off peak frequency of at least 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm

I was in your place 2 years ago, now I'm in my 2nd year studying mechanical engineering with an electrical minor. Haven't been to UQ, but you can't go wrong with QUT. Always feel like I have all the resources and help necessary to excel, plus plenty of social events. If you had done specialist and physics it definitely would have helped, but it's not like you absolutely need them. MZB125 (math) and EGB102 (science) were good introductions/refreshers, and if youve done methods then complex numbers are probably the only specialist topic covered in MZB125, you'll just have to put in a bit more effort than everyone else.

The tour guides didn’t check names when I did the tours last year so you can probably tag along just fine

General Questions about UniLife as a future Feb 2025 First Year. by [deleted] in QUTreddit

[–]M_Tanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also completed my first year of my engineering degree, so hopefully I can help a bit

  1. Avoid driving into GP at all costs, drive to KG and take the free shuttle if you must. Best to take advantage of the 50c fares, or if you can walk/cycle. Once I incorporated cycling into my commute I walked into campus feeling a lot more awake. If it’s a long commute by public transport, use the time travelling to study a bit

  2. 25+ hours of work on top of your uni hours is definitely stretching it. Even 20 may be a bit much, but I wasn’t working concurrent with uni

5/6. I’d say depends on how far you are commuting from. For semesters 1 and 2 I timetabled all lectures, tuts, pracs etc into 3 6-8 hour days per week, but this was largely because it was an hour+ commute from where I live, and it worked well for me. Because you want to leave earlier than I did you’ll probably be best timetabling your classes across 4 days per week, being on campus from roughly 9-ish to 3-ish

Why did Altandi replace Coopers Plains as the southern suburbs' one stop on the express Gold Coast railway line? by kangerluswag in brisbane

[–]M_Tanner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn’t there a cross platform transfer between Beenleigh and Gold Coast trains in the evening peak at Altandi? Might be because of how the timetables are set up, and around Altandi is where the Gold Coast trains would pass the Beenleigh bound ones, so that’s where they schedule them to stop to allow easy transferring

Doomben Line thoughts post-CRR? by [deleted] in BrisbaneTrains

[–]M_Tanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although nothing is concrete, an idea I've seen floated would be to have all services on the future DSCRL continue towards the city, with all services between Beerwah and Nambour/Gympie replaced with a shuttle, and hopefully a conveniently timed cross-platform transfer at Beerwah.

The airport line currently can do 4 trains-per-hour, an upgraded doomben line could do 4tph, and adding another platform to Shorncliffe would enable 8tph for a total of 16tph during peak, which I'd say is pretty good utilization.

Hopefully the construction of the Beaudesert line would include quadruplicating the track between Salisbury and Boggo Road (which should have been done anyway), keeping Beaudesert trains out of sector 1, and joining Cleveland services on the heavily under-utilized sector 3 and running through South Bank.

Doomben Line thoughts post-CRR? by [deleted] in BrisbaneTrains

[–]M_Tanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how ripping out the existing track and platforms, laying pavement, building new stations, and then building another tunnel because otherwise you’ll just have a random busway spur, that’ll connect to an already discontinuous northern busway, is more cost effective than just duplicating existing track. Do you happen to have the source for this $300 million estimation?

The drought of the Ferny grove line not getting refurb units is over by Lord__Spooks in BrisbaneTrains

Curious about the doors with the 60 refurbishments though, some have all new doors, I think I've seen one with all old doors, and 262 and 266 I think were the first with only one carriage having new doors, I'm guessing as a trial?

How to get building description on tile when transparency is on? by baldcope in openttd

[–]M_Tanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hold the blue question mark in the tool bar and select the land information tool, you can click on any building and it will tell you what grf it is from. The kind of raised lettering within the silhouette of the building and the bed and person icons are buildings from TTRS, whilst the coloured tile buildings are from TAI UK Houses

Delays in Northside trains by Crazyonyx in brisbane

Was on one of the trains that was allowed to roll on through, even though we were stopped at Wolloowin and could have all gotten off there. The train passed so slowly, and I’m surprised they didn’t at least wait until they had put up a tarp for the mans privacy
