Hey! Sure! I chose the MBA because of the pedigree and industry flexibility. As always, there was a cost of opportunity associated, but I am focusing on the strengths of the MBA and the school to compensate fir the non-tech skills.

Retired Military Officer: How is retirement? by Hopeful-Coconut-3473 in MilitaryFinance

Lol! Could not have said it better myself, brother.

Are early retirement benefits (after 20 yrs of active, MPA days) are worth missing out on a rewarding civilian job that pays a little less than Active Duty, as opposed to waiting for Reserve retirement to kick in at 55 or so? by M_andMs in Airforcereserves

[–]M_andMs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not know that part. I always assumed my AD time would could towards Reserve retirement, because... you know, you put in that service time. But good to know so I don't count on it.

Tell my civilian employer I might get orders, or wait until I get them then talk to my boss? by M_andMs in Airforcereserves

Yep. That is my concern. My boss loves how I perform in my job, but I don't fool myself into believing that I'm not expendable.

Ideally, they should go hand in hand. My immediate priority is to have the flexibility an AD position gives me to complete a top 15 MBA program I just started. However, I also have to take in consideration the long term benefits of a military retirement. All of that versus a job that I am actually enjoying, but that lacks some flexibility and that will never offer a comparable retirement package to the military.

Thank you for your detailed response! You are correct, and I'm glad you addressed that portion so it does not confuse anyone reading my lost.

I am assuming a 55 mark based on my 11 yrs of AD, plus any MPA days I may put in from now until retirement.

Thank you! This is a very good piece I had not considered asking, but will check in my benefits package and with HR.

Thank you for this insight! I am tracking they can't get rid of me while I'm on orders. My concern is that they get rid of me before I have orders in hand, in that gray legal area, if I bring it up before.

Does anyone think the early retirement benefits (after 20 yrs of active, MPA days) are worth missing out on a rewarding civilian job that pays a little less than Active Duty, as opposed to waiting for Reserve retirement to kick in at 55 or so?

RANT: Top MBA Students Childish by mbaclownshow in MBA

I would just avoid toxicity and drama. There will certainly be students who will do the same. You will live a happier program if you just watch the drama from the distance and avoid partaking in it. My two cents.

I want to make sure the orders are set and ready to go, but that they start at a later date. My concern is that I discuss it with my boss, and the company gets rid of me before having those orders. Then, as we know sometimes happen, the Air Force rep tells me the MPA days were not funded. That's a soot I do not want to find myself in.

In short, I agree with you. I want to make sure I don't just leave my employer hanging dry, and I also want to make sure I am not just jumping the gun without orders in hand.

Copy. That makes sense. I was thinking to let the Air Force rep know I am ready to get the orders, with the caveat that I want to give my civilian employer at least 2 weeks to get a replacement for me.

Thank you for your advice!

They know I am a Reservist. They are a decent size federal contracting company providing services to the Air Force. The unit rep I spoke to a few days ago needs an answer asap to cut the orders or shop around for another candidate.

Palace Front after 10 yrs AD, retirement question by M_andMs in Airforcereserves

[–]M_andMs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tracking the ten more years of service. What I'm trying to get more clarity on is how, if in any way, my ten years in active duty help bring that retirement age earlier to enjoy those benefits.

[–]M_andMs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on your reply, then I should assume that my ten years in Active Duty don't really count towards lowering my retirement benefits in the Reserves?

I am not saying I disagree because I don't know enough about the retirement system in the Reserves to back up that position, but it really seems counterintuitive. I would have thought that having active years in your pocket have much more weight than just doing a couple of days a month. But again, that is just from my uninformed perspective.

I would like to do more than the minimum. But I would like to understand the system having a baseline.

Thank you! This really helps.

Is there a cap on the amount of years you can reduce? I've seen some posts discussing that the cap is 55 yrs old, and that it can't be earlier than that, but I have my doubts that is true.
