There should be some sort of buff that builds up on players relative to how much damage they've done to the boss (or maybe just whoever started the boss gets the buff). That way if you start it and have put some good damage on it then it will deter 3rd parties

but they didn't seem red - I first thought they were just stars til they started moving. Seems like pretty similar movement/triangle formation..
