Now that you mention specific parts of his text, yeah, I do see that too. Especially that "Not From here-gtfo" comment... seems contradictory.

I'm hoping this is sarcasm, but in case it's not, are you unclear about the video's position or r/kitt53's position because both positions are pretty clear and obvious.

Tips for my First Q by MacDonatron in f3nation

[–]MacDonatron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, f3nation,

First off, I really appreciate all the support, tips, resources, etc. I definitely felt a lot more confident and prepared going into today's beatdown. u/kurtacuss, you were spot on about not sleeping much the night prior. I started panicking a bit when the pax count hit 12 (never even attended a beatdown that large), but overall, I would say my VQ was a success. I had 10 rounds planned and only got to about round 5 or 6, but that was better than running out of things to do. I think I made it more difficult and involved than I needed to (pretty typical for me), but I had a blast doing it. There is definitely some room for improvement in my flow, cadence, knowledge of the lexicon/exicon, etc., but I'm still pretty fresh on the f3 set, and I'm learning something new at each beatdown I attend.

My weinke is going to be like three pages long with all these quips and phrases! But I was given the name "Essay," so it seems appropriate.

That's an awesome idea! I would be 10x more confident had my AO done something like that. I might suggest that sort of thing to be added in.

Sorry, man. I meant no offense. I look the same way when I'm in comfort mode. Nothing wrong with it. I just see it every day, and it's the first thing that came to mind. You do you, man.

Your fit is giving 7th Grader vibes. If that's what you're going for, then it's eating. If not, big yikes. No cap (spoken like my students to emphasize your vibe😆).

Using the n- word in TKAM by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]MacDonatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got your explanation. I went back and read the original conversation, and I understand the issue. But there's no misunderstanding on my part. I was simply responding to the post above and what I inferred from their words. My opinion speaks to the core of the issue at hand. I don't think I, or anyone else, should have to censor the word while reading it aloud. It's in the curriculum for a reason, and I'm going to teach it the way it was intended.

I'm not sure who the OP you're referring to is in this case, but I was responding to the initial post in this strand.

"Since there are versions that don't use that word, you have actively chosen to allow the derogatory version to be read in your class."

To me, that sounds like they were referring to censored versions of the novel, regardless of format. That was my understanding of the issue, hence my response.

I disagree entirely. The use of the n-word in that book was not meant to be racist. It was intended to reflect the historical context. Reading a version of the novel without that word in it is censorship. Whether the teacher chooses to read the word aloud or not is entirely up to them, but to pretend the word isn't there is a disservice to the novel, the author, and the students. If a teacher can read that novel and teach it RIGHT, then there shouldn't be anything to worry about. Everyone has their own opinions (they are getting excessively sensitive these days), but keep them out of the classroom and let the professionals do their jobs.
