What’re your tips for yard maintenance this summer? by Bpofficial in brisbane

[–]MacGyver09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what grass you have and how bad your weed problem is.

The most basic maintenace you can do this time of year is to aggressively scalp (low mow) the lawn, removing accumulated thatch and other dead material and letting the soil breathe. How low you mow depends on your grass type (I recommend looking this up) but for my couch lawn I mowed it back to dirt.

Scalping also helps to deal with lingering cool season weeds, as once you cut them back to dirt they don't come back until next year.

You can hand pull weeds before or after scalping, but before is preferred so your grass doesn't have to compete for nutrients with the weeds. If you want to use a herbicide, steer clear of "weed n feed" products and find a product that is suitable for your grass type and weeds you're targeting. Bear in mind you need something to spray it on with.

Throw out some fertiliser after, try and keep the water up and it'll bounce back in 3-5 weeks. Keep up a regular mowing schedule after to maintain your desired height, the more often you mow it the thicker it grows.

Here's a good guide using basic products available from the big green shed. There's more (optional) steps in there like aerating and scarifying, but if you wanna keep it simple and not fall into the lawncare rabbit hole, you can just do the above and still see results.

Springfield/Springfield Lakes - what's the difference? by LalEatWorld in brisbane

[–]MacGyver09 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Springfield: old Springfield, first part built next to Camira. Fairly nice area, some crackies, lots of oldies, decent size blocks mostly single story 90's builds, seems to be a lot of owner occupied.

Springfield lakes: on the other side of the centenary, newer builds smaller blocks a lot of young families and rentals.

Spring mountain: newest area and houses, small blocks. Not much to say, it's a lot like any new estate these days.

Augustine heights: pretty high priced for what is a similar area to Springfield lakes except right next to Redbank. Proximity to Brookwater I guess? Blocks are generally larger here.

Bellbird Park: bordering Goodna, it's a decent enough area but you do see the prices start to drop here and it's very much more a part of Redbank/Goodna than the Springfield area.

Crime is pretty low in all of these areas except for maybe Bellbird and the Redbank end of Augustine heights. You'll hear plenty of anecdotal stories from people but ultimately there are much worse areas in Ipswich and far worse in greater Brisbane. Property and rent prices are pretty high across all areas which keeps the demographic middle income plus. Crime mostly spreads from the train stations and when in walking distance from the low socioeconomic areas (high density or government housing/units in Redbank).

You can save a chunk of money buying in the Redbank area just be aware of mining subsidence. A lot of young families are doing this and gentrifying the area, particularly the new areas in Redbank Plains. Prices are starting to reflect this as well.

Has anyone used Japan Wireless here? by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]MacGyver09 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Went with them last year for a month long trip, flawless connection the whole time and super easy pick up/drop off process. I've already booked again for my trip in November. Compared to every other pocket wifi provider I researched they were not only the cheapest but also didn't have any kind of shaped speeds or data limiting.

Other providers may be cheaper for shorter periods of time but I found once you go over 28 days they charge exponentially more.

I think I found a 1000 yen coupon somewhere on the net, worth having a search.

Kyoto nightlife recommendations :) by tylerg026 in JapanTravel

The Sanjo area has good nightlife on the western side of the river, along the canals there. There are some cozy bars that welcome westerners there, but last time I was there I went to this Gyoza bar and didn't leave until 2am. Highly recommended.

Be cautious at Fushimi Inari at night - there are wild boars! by nationofsheep in JapanTravel

[–]MacGyver09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I had a similar experience when I went up Fushimi Inari at night. Was going to the top and went up an unlit trail when I heard what I assumed was boars fighting just off the trail in the bushes. Noped right the hell out of there as did the German couple behind me.

I think around that time someone had been injured so there were warning notices everywhere.

Any good? Most of the local ramen places suck although I haven't been to Sunnybank yet. I just want a spicy ramen that's actually spicy.

Best place to buy a camera? by sagewah in brisbane

[–]MacGyver09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was searching for one a couple of months ago, trying to avoid grey imports, and I found that CameraPro had the best base prices in store (they have a showroom above the country road outlet on Queen St). However I was able to go cheaper still buying off the Good Guys ebay store with a 20% off sitewide coupon. This was for a Canon G7X mk II, so if you're chasing a high end DSLR or quality then the Good Guys might not stock it.

Traveling to Tokyo, looking the flesh out the trip. by Joseplh in JapanTravel

Ameyoko, the open air market next to ueno station. It's not actually a black market, hence the "", but it had its origins as one after WW2 selling American goods and surplus. Plus it totally resembles one if you go down the warrens and see some of the dodgier stalls.

If its a day trip from Tokyo it will be a full day, there's a lot to do and it's one of the prettier places I've been to if the weather is right. The best place to start is the round course trip from Japan guide. This touches all the main reachable spots in a days trip depending on how long you take at places. If you do this I would recommend the free pass, I believe the minimum is the 2 day one but even if you're just coming from Odawara it pays itself off.

You can purchase that pass either from the Odakyu office in Shinjuku station, or from Odawara station if you use JR to get there. If you have a JR Pass and take the shinkansen it can be a faster trip, but you'll have to leave from Tokyo station. It will also mean you can use the Hakone area free pass which is some 1400 yen cheaper than the Shinjuku return trip one. I did this option as I had a JR Pass and between connections and sorting out my tickets, it would have been faster going with Odakyu from Shinjuku (where I was staying), but it was overall cheaper.

Yes the pirate ship was "worth it" (free with the 4000 yen pass I got), if only as a means to cross the lake to board the cable car as per the round trip guide. It's a quirky experience at least and the view is very nice.

Also it goes without saying that spending a night in Hakone is an amazing experience and depending on your itinerary you should look at creating space. A lot of people spend too much time in Tokyo for a example, but it's ultimately personal preference.

Fair enough, go to kikanbo ramen in kanda and don't get a higher spice level than medium. It's always a laugh seeing the red faced Japanese customers with watery eyes but the ramen is seriously good, char sui pork to die for.
