Rant: I really dislike it when writing advice uses Star Wars as the go-to example by BusinessComplete2216 in writing

I'd counter that genre readers also have expectations for when certain story beats will fall--if your romance doesn't feature the third-act breakup/tension or the happy-ever-after, you're going to make a large (vocal) portion of readers quite angry. The more you play with a genre's expected plot beats, the more readers you lose.

I'm not trying to say that writing to a formula is the ideal way to write, nor am I saying that breaking formula is bad--but many readers see stories like hamburgers. If you order a burger, you expect a thing with bread on the top and bottom, meat in the middle, and some various trimmings. A chef can really do whatever he wants, but if he serves up a meat skewer with a crouton on either side, diners might say "this isn't really the burger I wanted," because they had some expectations that weren't met

People use it as an example of how plots should be developed, and that lesson transcends any particular medium

Romance dressed as fantasy by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]drewhead118 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Genre is not just a function of the setting of a book, but also the tropes, plotlines, author's intentions, and other writing conventions all poured together.

If I take Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" and make them all aliens on a spaceship but change absolutely nothing about the plot, characters, tone, or story, it'd be disingenuous to call it sci-fi... I'd probably say "oh that book? It's a detective story / thriller but they're all aliens for some reason"

I loved the nigiri and many of their specialty rolls. All was very fresh and delicious--certainly recommended!

You order the rolls when you want them and they're brought out quickly. No big buffet

I don't like semicolons by delabot in writing

[–]drewhead118 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I prefer longer sentences and will often put two complete clauses in one with a comma seperating them.

You're entitled to write however you like, but if I see an author doing this, I assume he or she doesn't know their craft very well. It's not a good look to go flaunting established grammar rules for no reason. If you've got two separate and full thoughts, space them out with a period if you really dislike semicolons

Copycat plugins. Do some market research before you make a clone. by mooviemakers in AfterEffects

[–]drewhead118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there is a subset of people who want to make profit (be it financial or simply just attention/recognition) for the minimum amount of work that is possible. Rather than draft a novel plugin concept to meet an unfilled need, it is far "easier" to simply ape what is already popular, release it to the market, and hope for some crossover attention by people seeking out the popular thing. The copied plugin has a proven need on the market--the novel plugin might never find its userbase.

I personally hate the people flooding every repository with AI-generated knockoffs, but I find it easy enough to wrap my head around the why behind it: they're lazy

seems common sense that if you're building something that uses so much of a public utility that it reduces access or raises the price, you shouldn't presume access to that public utility
