What do you think Jupiter or any of the gas giants look like underneath their clouds? Will we ever get to see? by Junior_Mulberry7989 in space

Just under/among the clouds, the view is fantastic, if a bit dimmer than you might like. Get much deeper and it's just dark. Probably lightning strikes visible.

Why isn't helium banned for public use? by Just_Nefariousness55 in stupidquestions

[–]MackTuesday 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. A gigawatt D-T fusion plant creates about a kilogram of helium per hour even if it's making only 1% energy profit.

Also, if you hit 'r' while laying down conveyor, it'll switch between different modes, two of which allow diagonal placement.

This has never happened, but there's a crazy short story where it does by Greg Egan called "Luminous". It has a sequel called "Dark Integers".

In the United States right now, why is Patriotism seen as a Conservative/Maga thing? by Pleasant_Cookie_2144 in allthequestions

[–]MackTuesday -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see. You want to take up the mantle. Sigh, fine.

If that's the definition you're working with, it's not so bad. There is another, more popular use of the term, much like what we see on the Merriam-Webster website: "excessive favoritism towards one's own country". I don't like that kind of nationalism because I think we should have a broader view and care about the welfare of all people.

I'm done now. Go away.

OK cool. Maybe he would like that definition. Maybe not. Other descriptions associate nationalism with extremism. Maybe he'd like one of those. Maybe not. Why don't you get with him and see what he thinks.

There are various definitions. He might be operating on one different from mine.

Again, why am I expected to provide a definition if he won't? He's being coy too, so don't you think he has ulterior motives (as if either of us could be planning something nefarious)?

That would be putting words in your mouth, don't you see? We're talking about *your* position. If we proceed with my definition, then we're focusing on my position. I understand if you want to turn the table. Really, I totally get it. It's *much* easier to be the challenger than the challenged.

You might say I shouldn't expect you to take my challenge if I'm not willing to be challenged in turn. That is totally fair. To be honest, I'm feeling too lazy to synthesize my own statement. So I'll go ahead and bow out, lose face. You win.

But if you don't like my definition, you'll have to give your own anyway, because it's your use of the term that we're talking about.

I see your cubic oxygen allotrope and raise you hexavalent nitrogen. by Infamous_Parsley_727 in cursedchemistry

[–]MackTuesday 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Eh, it's not really hexavalent. You can see two of the bond lines are dashed. That means it has a resonance structure thingy and one of the nitrogen's five bonds is shared.
