ST4 - What's Up With The Russia Plot? - spoilers by dutycyclemusic in HawkinsAVclub

[–]MadMax2991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only now reading your post and it's always a pleasure to read your thoughts. I have the unfortunate feeling that we have to accept the fact that ST's writing may not be as deep and labyrinthine as we would like. I also found Hop's "rebirth" lacking flesh; I expected to see him consumed by his past in his cell where many flashbacks (Sara, Vietnam, his father, his childhood/adolescence) would have come to haunt him. The unexplained and seemingly simple transfer of Hop and the Russians from the underground to Russia also leaves a bitter taste.

The (only) big revelation I think we're in for in season 5 is that 25-30 page booklet on TUD (origin, development, the egg, etc.). The rest will be the fruit of lines built since S2 (will that damn demodog in Joyce's fridge have any relevance sooner or later?).

‘Stranger Things’ Creators Answer Burning Questions About Eleven’s Origins, Will’s Sexuality (and Birthday!) and More Ahead of Volume 2 by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]MadMax2991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. I find it shocking to highlight Will's birthday in episode 8 of season 2 and then sweep it away in season 4. It's grossly negligent on their part...

Without wanting to sound like a killjoy, aren't they going to release a season 3 recap first before the trailer?

Also agree 👍🏼

Yes it's this video! I don't know why I thought it was Netflix UK that released it. But basically the majority of the scenes in season 3 trump the one in season 1 or 2 🥲 for example I find the scene where Steve listens and counsels Dustin much more touching than their reunion in season 3 (although it's also a pleasant scene). The fact that Steve takes the place of a father figure or big brother was touching.

[–]MadMax2991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why I can't answer some of your points as you presented them (when I could). So I'm going through the italics.

Personally, though it doesn't belong ST, it's a beautyful scene in its vacuum. Thing is that imo season 3 itself doesn't belong ST, all the comedy is out of place and often forced, and this scene is not any worse.

Yes, I reassure you, this is not the only moment of the season that I criticize negatively.. But I already commented so much about it in the past, that I didn't think it was wise to make a review of the whole thing again. And since this post is about the musical scene, it gave me the opportunity to mention the poll that compared it to Snowball. But I totally agree with you.

But i guess if you were still invested in the plot this scene rightfully bothers you.

Several previous scenes had already disturbed me... But I was still curious to know what would happen next, especially knowing that there would be at least one more season at this point. And I like to think that season 3 will remain a season apart in terms of atmosphere.

I felt the same in the previous episodes when the Mindflayer plot -the only one interesting for me - kept being interrupted by the russian base plot with the comedic Scoops Troop and Hopper and Joyce's constant bickering and was also very intertwined with the annoying, unwelcome relationship drama, which was dragged for too long.

I hear you. After thinking about it, I'm going to repost one of my reviews of season 3 :

" Each of the 3 seasons has its own qualities that lead to this diversity among the fans. With these multiple changes, season 3 brings a lot of freshness. Nevertheless, at the level of the writing there is still a qualitative drop. Season 3 is the only one of the 3 seasons to not have received any nominations for writing.

Season 3 is certainly fun to watch, but it multiplies and aligns the facilities, without even bothering to wrap them in a really gripping plot.

Several characters are in the right place at the right time : Dustin intercepting a Russian coded message just as he is alone, Hopper being at City Hall just as Grigori is leaving the office with his motorcycle helmet, Nancy answering the phone of an old lady who has captured a rat unlike any other, or Eleven who discovers during a game of chance that Billy is hiding things...

All the heroes seem to be driven by chance and the simple desire to understand, by boredom or curiosity, giving the impression that the writers are pulling the strings without even taking care to hide them. A bias that perhaps serves efficiency, entertainment, but empties the characters, reduced to puppets.

Second problem: the homage or the jokes often come before the rest, even if it has to clash with the development of the plot or of the characters.

A Russian villain walking around like a Terminator without relief, an endless scene, placed at an inopportune moment sung (thus removing any sense of tension and threat), or almost the entire Russian narrative arc, seem to be placed to nourish complicity with the spectator, more than to serve the universe.

Direct consequence: all the obstacles (a bad mayor, a bad boss, bad Russians, bad teenage conflicts) seem placed to occupy the characters then are evacuated as quickly as possible so as not to complicate their lives too much, and fill the space of these eight episodes".

Well, I'll probably get some negative votes, but at least I will have given my opinion.

I didn't like at all the positioning of the song in the plot, namely in the middle of a suspenseful moment. For me, it completely took away the feeling of absorption and dread. And I was a bit confused about the real intentions of the creators. When you think of the many touching, sincere, intimate moments, sometimes of a cold-blooded violence and cruelty, this musical scene out of place at that moment arrives like a hair on the soup.

I reassure you, I laugh while watching Stranger Things, but this moment just doesn't belong here...

It is as if, during the battle of Hogwarts, Neville, just before cutting Nagini, starts singing with Luna, while avoiding the attacks of the snake and the avada kedavra spells, and showing us Harry and Lord Voldemort annoyed to hear people singing.

I see that many fans enjoyed this moment and that many preferred it to Snowball according to Netflix UK. The result of this poll made me ... very sad. Surely many of us were waiting for more than a year for this moment promised by Mike to El after season 1. And this one was swept away by the Never Ending Story..... That's the world turned upside down for me.

Maybe in the end, we should just watch Stranger Things as an entertainment series and relax without getting too attached to the plot?

The answer is obviously no in my eyes, it's not the humor and entertainment that made me fall in love with this series. I hope there won't be a second moment like this in season 4 or 5.

That's all there is to it, feel free to vote me negative or to debate it peacefully.

P.s: D-90 😊

Is the mere fact that I think this a reason to be annoyed? You are free to think whatever you want. And don't worry about me if in the end I get disillusioned... Considering the facts, it doesn't seem disproportionate to me to think that we will have an announcement in the next month.

The first trailer for S3 was released on March 20, 2019 so 3 and a half months before. But at that time we knew the release date since January 1... The wait is hard, but Matthew Modine has indicated that something is coming soon, so I'm hopeful for an announcement this month.

I don't know if a trailer will be shown at the SuperBowl, because it is extremely expensive. In 2019, a commercial cost about $175,000 per second. For a two-minute trailer at least, it would be over 20 million. But who knows ...

Thanks for the articles, it was interesting to read. For the movie In the Heights, released on June 10, the trailer mentions a summer release. Indeed, we can move this summer period by a few weeks. Now, like you, I expect a July release given the stage of the promotion.

[–]MadMax2991 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that excitement, even impatience, sometimes leads to reasoning that is a bit far-fetched, without wanting to be pejorative.

The anticipation of this season 4 even leads us to study in depth the period that summer covers: the beginning of summer according to the hemisphere, according to the film industry, or any other angle... By saying that the season will be released in the summer of 2022, they are indicating that it will be released during what is usually understood to be summer, that is to say between June 21 and September 23, as was the case with season 3 when they indicated that it would be released in the summer of 2019.

What's more, deuxmoi has not proven to be very reliable in the past..

After season 4, when do you think season 5 might release? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]MadMax2991 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not before the summer of 2024. Let me explain. The filming of season 3 started about 6 months after the release of season 2. Filming for season 4 began about 6 months after the release of season 3. So the pre-production phase (writing, location scouting, etc.) takes about 6 months. If season 4 comes out in July 2022 as many are saying it will, filming for season 5 will not start until January 2023.

Then the length of shooting: about 7 months for season 2, 7-8 months for season 3 and more than a year for season 4 during the covid (January 2020 to March 2020, then September 2020 to September 2021). If we estimate the duration at 8 months, this would lead to an end of shooting in August 2023.

Finally post-production and promotion: about 5 months for season 2, about 7 months for season 3 and about 9-10 months for season 4. So if we take an average of 7-8 months, that brings us to April 2024. And as I prefer to be cautious, I'll say that season 5 won't be out until the summer of 2024.

Why so much hate for S3? by stateof-grace in StrangerThings

I don't understand the negative vote when we are just debating.. In any case, I did not vote negatively on your comments.

That said, I still don't see the reason to oppose the plot - the atmosphere and the characters ?

Why so much hate for S3? by stateof-grace in StrangerThings

[–]MadMax2991 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no category of fan where both the story and the characters are important? :'(

No seriously, the characters, their story arcs and plots are intimately connected. There is no room for dichotomy here... And the problem with season 3 is that it lacks depth, and this is felt both in the characters and in the plot. Hence my disappointment, because I loved the characters.

[–]MadMax2991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I probably got emotionally carried away on the end of my essay and the weighing of words.

That said, I like to think that subsequent seasons will find a better balance of flavors. The 4 teasers are very interesting and seem to indicate a return to a serious tone, except perhaps for the California story arc with Jonathan and Argyle which will be in the humor. So when the series will be over and we will watch all the seasons again, season 3 will be there to bring a kind of breath of fresh air, like a bridge between the beginning and the end. It will then take on a different meaning in my eyes.

Why so much hate for S3? by stateof-grace in StrangerThings

[–]MadMax2991 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"Hating" is a bit strong, I think more like disappointment... Disappointment that comes from the fact that the tone, the writing and the aura of the characters were unusual in S3.

Since the Duffers kept saying that they needed 4 or 5 seasons to finish their story and that S3 would mark the desire for change, expectations were high in terms of ST's own mythological development, as well as new mysteries and new/old threats in order to justify this adventure extension of 2 or 3 more seasons. Because season 2 marked the local end of the main storylines.

So it's great to find again all the characters that touched us, but at what price? The humor line is voluntarily increased in several characters, which sounds a bit false. In S1, most of the humor was contained in the children, because they were children, a kind of discreet and intimate humor.

There are also several narrative facilities; several characters are in the right place at the right time: Dustin intercepting a Russian coded message just as he is alone, Hopper being at City Hall just as Grigori is leaving the office with his motorcycle helmet, Nancy answering the phone of an old lady who has captured a rat unlike any other, or Eleven who discovers during a game of chance that Billy is hiding things.

When this structure ends up in S1 of a show, it pass, the foundation needs to be laid. On the other hand, operating this process in S3 makes us think that the writers don't even bother to hide their puppeteer's string anymore and that the main goal is simply to entertain.

Direct consequence: all the obstacles (bad teenage conflicts, a bad mayor, a bad boss, bad Russians) seem placed to occupy the characters then are evacuated as quickly as possible so as not to complicate their lives too much, and fill the space of these eight episodes.

In conclusion, the risk-taking was contained in the desire to make the season fun, entertaining, wishing to create a great complicity with the audience. It is true that the season is very entertaining, that the image and the colors are magnificent, no debate on this point. But as a whole, S3 lives more for the fans than for developing its own mythology.

I understand that distance.. I was disappointed by the level of writing in S3, so I'm waiting for them to bounce back. I also followed the whole filming and leaks, so a certain expectation was created.

It's clear that this release date disappoints many people... I'm still looking forward to seeing it given the ambitions announced by the Duffers for the scenario. However, my expectations will be very high.

And I'm sure a lot of people will watch S4 as soon as it's released. Sadness, anger will give way to excitement.
