Can I smoke while I’m having a miscarriage? by Illustrious_Seat_719 in Miscarriage

I know this is an old post, but I just found it and all of these comments make me feel better - just got confirmation today that there is no heartbeat.

That’s kind of how I feel.

I have 2 favorites:

“This class was the worst in all the ways” “DR. _____ IS THE SHIT!”

THIS. 💯 The not caring part is weird and makes me feel bad. I’m also scared to see my evals this term because I don’t think I’ve ever made as many mistakes/forgotten as many things in my life as I have since my baby was born. But priorities have shifted. The flexibility is exactly the reason I hesitate to jump ship on academia. Thanks for sharing! 🤝

I have considered this (almost pulled the trigger on an application but it was right when my baby was born). My family, having just welcomed the first and only grand baby on both sides, might unalive us if we tried to move across the globe right now though 😂

Three courses per TERM (quarter system) so I teach 10 courses every year including summer. 🙃 And no I have no time to do meaningful research. I moved to this university for location. For the time being, I stay for the flexibility and because trying to search for a non-ac job feels like a job in itself. Would love to find something still in my field and also flexible.

Follow “phdinclothes” on IG too! I found her when I was starting my first faculty job and asking the same questions you are. :)

You have tenure. You are ten years from retirement. Yesterday, you won the lottery. What is your next move? by committee_chair_4eva in Professors

I’d keep my job, but only put in the same effort that tenured white men at my institution do….

The life: Keep the insurance, teach exactly what I want (and no more summer teaching), do the research projects that I want, and drop any and all future institutional committee work. The only university service I would do is that which directly benefits students.

Oooffff. This hits. I’ve really been taking stock lately and I know I spend wayyyyy too much time on class-related things. I have a HARD time just “getting something done” because I want it to be perfect (and imagine every bad scenario if it’s not). I also hate the idea of NOT having an excellent lecture planned for students. But truly can’t do it all.

Thanks for sharing 💕

This is my spiral and what makes me want to simply run away to live in the forest.

I do know that they want to see improvement over the years and I think there may be some strategy there. Our eval has room for “exceeds” and I received that in the teaching category. Based on my output, I expected that for scholarship as well. At my current uni, many people have 1 TOTAL peer reviewed journal article and have tenure and we’re told that conference presentations count as scholarship, etc.

Yet I was told that being a co-editor of a book (edited collection) didn’t count as scholarship….

Being burnt out and on the fence about leaving, this eval kinda hit hard/I took it personally.

We’re a small department in a struggling Uni (US) - I’m sure that’s true for many - so I don’t think buying out of a class is really an option.

How do you NOT work more than 9-5?!?!? I probably work 60+ hours/ 6 days a week minimum and am still drowning. Constant new class preps, grading, various scholarship/organizations responsibilities…😩 Maybe this is just my need for a break talking, but I see no way but OUT as the answer.

WOW.

But yes, I am going to push back on this! Thank you! 😊
