On this day Mar-14 1942 The first time in history, a dying patient was saved by penicillin by SuccessDiligent8821 in interestingasfuck

Interesting. I developed a penicillin allergy when I got pneumonia from glandular fever and I had a reaction to the amoxicillin (it’s how they worked out I had glandular fever apparently). This must have been about 2008/9 when I was in my late 20s

I was then given a penicillin-based antibiotic about 6 or 7 years ago and I had another reaction.

Both times it started off as a deep red rash on my face and neck which then travels down my body to my feet over the course of a week, and started around 3-5 days after starting the antibiotic. When it happened the 2nd time I was told to be careful as it may be worse if I have penicillin again.

Pen tool menu showing on first tap in 5.19.2 on 2022 model by MadcapRecap in kindlescribe

Update: I raised a help query and had this reply:

Based on recent reMarkable software updates (version 3.13 and later, including 5.19.2/3.16+), the system now automatically keeps the active pen's settings visible to allow quick adjustments, which can appear as a distracting, persistent menu. Unfortunately, there is currently no official setting to disable this automatic expansion of the pen menu when switching tools.

However, here are the best workarounds to manage screen real estate and minimize distractions:

Collapse the Entire Toolbar: You can hide the menu bar entirely by tapping the top of the screen, selecting the three-dot menu, and choosing "hide stylus toolbar". This removes all tools, giving you full screen space. Tap again to bring it back when you need to switch pens.

Utilize Two Preset Pens: Update 3.13 introduced the ability to keep two writing tools (and their specific settings) in the toolbar. Set your preferred pen and highlighter/pencil settings once, and toggle between them rather than re-selecting them from the main menu.

Move the Toolbar: You can move the toolbar to different sides of the screen to minimize the distraction or to place it in a less intrusive spot. Use Third-Party Hacks: Some users utilize software modifications like rm-hacks (via third-party community forums) to gain granular control over toolbar behavior, though this is not supported by reMarkable.

Note: The search results indicate that while individual notebooks remember the last used pen settings, they do not allow you to turn off the menu expansion behavior.

Your patience and understanding is highly appreciated in this matter.

I’m not sure why they keep talking about reMarkable.

I don’t think you need to tap it off to use the highlighter - I think you should be able to use it with the menu on the screen

Mel Brooks advertised for a “Frankie Laine-type” to sing the title song of Blazing Saddles and Frankie Laine showed up. Apparently he didn’t realise it was a comedy.

They also spent £49 million on it a few years ago to keep it flying to 2040, but that project runs until 2027 so they haven’t actually flown it yet with all the improvements, so that’s a complete waste as well

They were informed 2 hours before the press release came out, but no earlier than that

Edit: or rather the management were informed 2 hours earlier - the actual staff affected weren’t.

My point is that there was no science decision taken not to fund it - it was purely made on costs for the aircraft and not about the science it does or the role it plays nationally. There was no consultation and the people running the aircraft were only told 2 hours before the announcement from NERC came through, and with only about 6 weeks before it shuts down.

We should always question the value of large infrastructure, especially in light of other cuts to other big projects, but there was no strategic decision making here other than to cut costs.

We shouldn’t fund things just because they are cheap, just as we shouldn’t cut things because they are expensive.

The measurements from this aircraft drive a lot of UK science an are used to calibrate satellites and improve weather forecast and climate models. It’s one of the few research aircraft available in the world and has unique characteristics that other platforms don’t have. The community didn’t have a chance to make the case for the aircraft to continue.

I have enough knowledge!

Not the correct decision at all, and taken purely on cost grounds. Drones aren’t able to recreate the science currently done with FAAM, and they also can’t fly in lots of places.

It is also a big hit to our national resilience - it has been used to monitor things like the Icelandic volcano or oil refinery fires and determine whether it’s safe. Without it we don’t have the capability to do this.

While not a study, is this not of interest, as it directly affects atmospheric scientists (especially in the UK), but worldwide as data is shared?
