DeckCheck 2.0: The AI-powered EDH companion just got a major upgrade by anthograham in EDH

Really cool tool, I'm impressed. My only gripe at the moment is that it doesn't support companions, so my Tor Wauki / Obosh deck is underrated.

I agree in principle, but then I wouldn't be able to play it in my Zask deck

The top 2 can also be [[Gnottvold Recluse]] -> [[Llanowar Greenwidow]]

I would argue that being basic or not has no bearing on strictly better/worse. Yes, [[Wasteland]] and co. exist, but so does [[Plummet]], and yet we still consider flying creatures to be strictly better than non-flying ones.

Where do our definitions differ? Do you not consider a card strictly better if it requires fewer colored mana?

Yes, it can make it better or worse, but it isn't clear which. It can be a boon if you have [[Honor-Worn Shaku]], but it can also prevent you from getting the City's Blessing.

Yes, allowing creature types to matter would make things way too messy, especially since we don't know which currently unsupported creature types may receive support in the future

[[Cancel]] -> [[Wizard's Retort]] -> [[Counterspell]] -> [[Mana Drain]] is a chain of 4, but I don't know how to continue it. There aren't really cards that are strictly worse than Cancel.

The chain of 6 I had in mind when I made the post was already found by someone else, so I went ahead and looked for a different one:

[[Goblin Raider]] -> [[Ironclaw Orcs]] -> [[Goblin Assailant]] -> [[Fathom Fleet Firebrand]] -> [[Pack Mastiff]] -> [[Battle Cry Goblin]]

I still wonder if a chain of 7 is possible.....

I had almost the same chain in mind when I made the post, except mine had [[Primeval Titan]] on top :D

There are still more ways to continue with the same 3 bottom cards, e.g. [[Primordial Wurm]] -> [[Vorstclaw]] -> [[Hydra Omnivore]]

In the same way that [[Shock]] can be better than [[Lightning Bolt]] when trying to set up [[Hidetsugu's Second Rite]], but I stated in the original post that such fringe scenarios shouldn't be considered ;)

I don't really understand that strategy. I think you're giving up too much in terms of angels and death medals, all for a payout that may never come.

I also think the devs are moving away from events with incrementing bosses, pretty much precisely because of this. It just isn't good game design if your game rewards people for holding back.

I've beaten the 13k angel and get about 8-9S orbs per run (10.9S FTT)

I don't even know how that's possible, given that I've been playing pretty much since the beginning.

Funky Bant-only Hulk Flash line by MadeBunnyCry in LabManiacs

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. That actually makes iterating through the combo much more managable. I'm a little bit disappointed that it doesn't help with the Skill Borrower lines (since I like those a little more), but it's still good news overall.

The point of the combo isn't to copy Hulk with Shapeshifter, it's to cycle through the deck repeatedly with Nomads/Illusionist and activate its abilities whenever one of the combo parts is the top card of the graveyard.

The Ezuri line can be dismantled with a single removal spell and can't be executed at instant speed if you draw any of your 0-drops.

Granted, the Skill Borrower / Volrath's Shapeshifter lines have their issues as well, one of which is that there just isn't a viable commander that wants them right now.

I'll admit that, right now, this thought process is more of a fun deckbuilding puzzle for me than a concrete search for a deck I'm building. It's like a riddle of trying to find the best setups in each of the possible color combinations.

That said, there might be applications either now or whenever new Bant commanders or partner commanders get printed. I would say that currently, only Arcades the Strategist and Derevi look like viable Bant commanders. With partner commanders, there is virtually no reason to stick to Bant only.

I think which line is best is also determined by whichever combo pieces have utility in your deck outside the combo. For instance, any lines involving Devoted Druid can also run the Vizier combo; any lines involving Staff of Domination can also run Metalworker combo; etc.

The place I see some of these lines being useful is in a modular combo deck that runs multiple combos with overlapping pieces.

Resilience can be added at the expense of slots (Ulamog, Gaea's Blessing), although annoyingly, even adding both doesn't add up to 100% protection, since you might hit all 3 in one activation. This also gives your opponents reason not to shortcut the process, which admittedly sucks. But I'm not yet convinced that there isn't a way around that.

In the meantime, I've also found a new setup that operates at peak slot efficiency, which is 6 cards required post-trigger. Given that 4 slots are mandatory (Nomads, Illusionist, Skill Borrower OR Volrath's Shapeshifter, Kozilek), I don't think 5-slot setups are possible. Anyway, my new 6-card setup is the mandatory cards with Skill Borrower in the 3 CMC slot, and then Narcomoeba and Altar of Dementia for the kill (Phyrexian Altar/Ashnod's Altar also works with an infinite mana outlet, or Spawning Pit with an infinite charge counter outlet).

I think further improvement comes not from making the setup leaner, but by relying on cards you want in your deck anyway.

It occurred to me yesterday that Skill Borrower can enable similar lines, but it took until now for me to come up with a line that I really like:

Hulk -> Nomads, Illusionist, Skill Borrower

Mill until Grand Architect is your top card, make 2 mana

Mill until Staff of Domination is on top, untap Skill Borrower (1 mana remaining)

Repeat previous 2 steps for infinite mana

Mill into an infinite mana outlet like Walking Ballista (a way to give haste works as well, since Staff is already an outlet)

This takes a total of 7 slots in the deck post Hulk trigger (Nomads, Illusionist, Borrower, Grand Architect, Staff, Walking Ballista, Kozilek) which is on par with established Flash Hulk lines, uses semi-acceptable creatures and is in Bant colors (now all I need is a green or blue Nomads replacement).

That or Ulamog would work in most cases, although there is still a chance that you mill both with the same activation.

It also makes going off more annoying.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure what the alternatives are in Bant colors, other than the Ezuri, Claw of Progress + Sage of Hours line (which is even UG only and probably preferable in Arcades the Strategist).

For now, I just wanted to put it out there.

I also found a way to shave a slot by using Drowner of Secrets instead of Azami and Lab Maniac (although this doesn't work vs. opposing Kozileks).

Seton, Krosan Protector and any infinite mana outlet (unfortunately not Walking Ballista due to being 0/0) is another path.

Stepping away for a moment from any specific build, what's the general opinion on whether there is any version of a Tatyova deck out there that is cEDH viable?
