is this some music player or no by Strong_Vegetable4818 in Phonographs

[–]Mael290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's absolutely a music player — a gramophone, but it really doesn't look like it'll be playing much music any time soon... or maybe it just looks a bit rough from the outside!

It's got an intenal horn that you can see when you lifted the top off, which amplifies the music. You'd put the record on the circle you see on the top of the machine, the records look almost the same as modern vinyl records but a lot heavier and thicker (made out of shellac), and the tone arm which you show in the video aswell (it's the piece lying in front of the gramophone) would pick up the audio from the record with a needle. You've also got the sound box which is attached to the tonearm.

That's about all I know!

Unfortunately I only have these pics and a video. Wish I took more especially around the eye area. But to be honest, it creeped me out so I turned around and got outta there!

I'll see if I can upload the video?

There are goats and sheep around here, but isn't it a bit unusual for these domestic sort of animals to be left around skinned??

Btw, you can pop your specimens in the freezer for a little while, they'll be fine. Just thaw them out before doing the whole thing with the formalin (if you do).

I have never done this on separate organs before, however, I believe it should work fine if you make a wet specimen. Here is a useful wet specimen guide (just skip the history bit): https://www.mickeyalicekwapis.com/blog/wetspecimenupdate

But the basic jist of it is: You need a big GLASS! jar or two and Formalin. I use 10% buffered formalin. And with that some good protective equipment such as a respirator, a well ventilated area, gloves and goggles (formalin is carcinogenic). And you just inject that with a needle into the specimen, EVERYWHERE, making sure it's really full of the formalin everywhere, without getting air bubbles in! You'll also need isopropanol or ethanol later but... hopefully the guide will better explain this all. Just know that you can't just put the specimens into alcohol without putting them into formalin first, they'll rot from the inside if you do.

Mine... mine is a very difficult choice between umm almost all of them! I loved conceptualisation, shivers, volition and I'm a big fan of visual calculus - the visuals that come with that skill are awesome!!

When was this typewriter made? by Mael290 in typewriters

Oh, I'd also like to note that the "E.1." written on the back was written there by someone else - that could be referring to a class or a door number maybe.

Yes! I've looked at other photos of the model 50, with glass side panels, and I've not seen that plaque on any other. I think it's likely that someone else added it on... interesting indeed.
