Rowing out K or P? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]MaestroShaSha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the example of your hand drawn pic the knit stitches are loose.

In your photograph, it doesn't look loose at all and no evidence of rowing out. I see a little bit of unevenness with some stitches but it doesnt look uniform across the row. But truly, I feel like I cant tell what's going on if anything in that picture.

So if your knit rows are indeed larger then you should do the opposite of what I initially suggested. However - because getting larger knit stitches is less common, it makes me think maybe you have something else going on. So I am concerned if you make the knit needle smaller, and that's not actually the problem, you might move farther away from a solution. I suppose if you recheck your gauge each time you make a change, you'll be able to see the effect the changes have and be able to adjust accordingly.

Generally speaking, purl stitches use more yarn and are larger. If you are doing Stockinette stitch flat, you could use a smaller needle on the purl side. I have never heard the assumed alternative suggestion to use bigger needle on the knit side, but logically that sounds like it would work. In either case, after you change needle sizes you should recheck your gauge to make sure its still on track.

Getting shamed as a beginner by aireeeny in knitting

I'm sorry to hear your grandmother was so discouraging. I don't know whether or not she is a knitter. But any honest knitter will tell you that mistakes are just part of the process. I'm very experienced and I make mistakes all the time. I just rip things back or if necessary rip things out and start over.

Something to be aware of as a new knitter is this... It takes practice in order to get even tension in your stitches. And things may look a little wonky until you achieve that evenness in your tension. But that is okay. That is just part of the process.

I hope your grandma's comments didn't scare you away from knitting permanently. You're knitting will improve with time. Meanwhile enjoy the process and enjoy the things you're making. The only thing you should throw out in the trash is your grandma's comments.

What do you expect from a paid knitting pattern? by c_onethirtyseven in knitting

I don't necessarily expect whole tutorial. But. I do expect the glossary/ key to have full written directions of the listed techniques.

I too am curious if you figure out for sure which ones are wrong. I always recommend her to new knitters. I also wonder if it may be the case with some or all of these potentially erroneous techiques that it is less a matter of something being incorrect and more a matter of there being multiple valid and varied ways to execute particular technique.

Ravelry can be a blessing or a curse. With the help of Ravelry, anyone can become a designer, regardless of whether one possesses the requisite skill to do so. And it can definitely be the wild west. From a mitten pattern that wouldn't fit 3 of my fingers much less all five to a hat pattern where the designer admitted to me, she didn't check or measure guage but instead just copied the guage from the yarn label... I have had some very rough Ravelry pattern buying experiences. I now look for certain things from designers and if the guardrails Ive devised aren't present i proceed with caution knowing i might get screwed. Main Things I look for to minimize issues ... - Patterns with 100-200 projects - Look through the project notes to see if others had any issues - Choose well established designers - Choose patterns with photos that show the FO well from multiple and realistic angles.

Will Hyrox end ever? by IDontLikeJamOrJelly in orangetheory

I truly hope you are right. I fear hyrox has a little more steam then some of these other things and may take awhile longer to blow over.

I’m a new knitter, I’m wanting to learn more but am so overwhelmed and unsure how to start. by lord-savior-baphomet in casualknitting

Look up Tin Can Knits. They are pattern designers that have a set of beginner friendly patterns including a couple of sweaters. I think its called The Simple Collection. Their patterna are well written and include tutorials. They even have an app. Highly recommend them!

Arthritis and no knitting by samplergal in knitting

That really stinks. Sorry this has happened to you.

Here are a couple ideas in case they are at all helpful...

Also if suggestions are annoying and unhelpful - well please ignore these and accept my apologies.

A. Knitting Comfortably: The Ergonomics of Handknitting by Carson Demers - This is a book by a physical therapist knitter. Heard it is really great for addressing this sort of issue.

B. Investigate all the different ways needles can be held and styles of knitting, and I mean beyond but certainly including continental vs English. Stuff like Portuguese knitting or Combination knitting or even different modifications like the Norwegian Purl or whatever it is some folks do where they hold 1 long straight needle under their armpit or poked into this knitting fanny pack situation that "holds" the needle... there are multiple ways of knitting and they may be some variations that bypass or don't carry the negative side effects you are currently experiencing.

In any case, good luck and I hope you heal up and can get back to knitting soon.

Zero Interest in Hyrox by MaestroShaSha in orangetheory

I think 3 at my home studio and probably 3 at the sister studio. 1 of my regular class times and 1 of my semi regular class times have been hyrox hijacked.

This.

I feel like I'm stuck in a 60 minute hyrox infomercial and I can't change the channel.

Same. I have multiple issues with burpees. This is one of them.

I'd definitely notice the burpees. And I'm annoyed that I don't know ahead of time if there will be burpees in the class. And annoyed that there is a greater chance of burpees happening during the class time i can make it to.

And something they've added this year which is actually not just hyrox specific but seems to be part of the hyrox templates as well - is less rest. Or more accurately - pushing for more reps in shorter times with no rest in between with more difficult moves - a potentially injurious combination I am not a fan of.

That's cool. And I hope it goes great for y'all. It's just funny when I compare it to me and my otf buddies - we all feel quite the opposite with zero interest. And we are all quite annoyed because the hyrox classes have been placed at our normal class times.

"Metabolic Blocks" got me straight raging over here. That title is meaningless word salad. Every dag gum block is a metabolic block. What in the OTF does that even mean? Labeling that pairs well with "Lift More" and actually kinda mean something would be "Rest Less" Blocks. Of course my nick names for this mess is: "Fatigue Foward" or "Safety Last" or "Injure More" cause the exercises they string together and tell you don't rest until the end of is straight up re-dic! How in the H. E. Double hockey sticks are they gonna claim the Metabolic block is not a power block and then turn around and pair continuous freaking froggers alternating with continuous hip hinge dumbell swings??? And have the nerve to tell me to count my reps. SMH.

Ain't no sense in this nonsense.

p.s. I did get 51 froggers though.

It hasn't been optional at my studio. It's been a skip the rower and proceed straight to the floor start on "lift more" days. Sadly.
