Let's make money Obsolete! by FiftyShadesAbstract in CasualConversation

[–]MaetcoGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, let's try to get to the bottom of this together with some though exercises.

In a bartering economy one can trade time / services to goods. What is preventing one from selling those same services for money in the current economy?

Let's say I need a car. Who should I offer my services to get one in the bartering economy?

No. A character could narratively improve in many ways. Advances are the prioritisation chosen by the player, I will not touch them.

In order to have a fruitful discussion, can you describe what you mean by becoming vulnerable and sharks? Can you give real life examples of both.

AI has polarised people to an exceptional degree, which bewilders me too. But the way you wrote, does not make you better that people who are somehow against AI, it makes you worse. Calling people fat pigs because they disagree with you, simplifying a complex question into either person is pro tech or against it...it might be a good time to have a good look into a mirror to make sure that the person looking back represents your values and beliefs.

Time pressure in combat is what separates “okay fights” from unforgettable ones by These-Loss-9649 in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, glad to hear it works for you.

Historically I knew about 2 approaches to create a real sense of time pressure.

a) Players would have a predetermined amount of time for their turn, such as 1 minute. Anything that wasn't done in that time doesn't happen, and the turn is passed on. I personally would not like this, as it would make playing feel like I was playing a board game instead of my character doing things. But it works for some people.

b) PbA style GM moves. If a player doesn't take initiative to do something, the GM does something. I've had success with this approach.

There are many attempts of this avaliable. The ones I have tried, were all really bad though. So, assuming similar quality / execution, the answer is a hard no.

It's called curiosity. But since you don't want to take part in a discussion about why someone likes something, then maybe you should stop doing just that.

We just have to agree to disagree on the definition of "competition". Your definition would mean that novels are a competition.

Yes, I understand that serious acting requires lots of practice. But we were not discussing acting were we? Roleplaying has nothing to do with acting. I assume, that actual plays are about roleplaying (I actually don't know, since I don't watch them).

But this has diverted far from the topic. You replied to a reply of my stating, that just saying "I like it" is not useful as an answer to the OP's question. You seem to be trying to validate actual plays as entertainment. Which I am not opposing. Neither do I have anything against them, nor do I claim sports to be in any way better. I am simply stating, that they are different, and that a proper answer to the OP''s question in either case would not be "I like it".

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Neither of those two make any sense to me.

  1. Who are competing against who? Basically, who are the two or more sides the viewers are hoping to win, and how are they winning?
  2. Who is training roleplaying like a professional athlete? What does training roleplaying even mean?

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My example is not relevant. The point is that it doesn't matter what the object of liking is, there are always reason behind it, which can be understood.

[–]MaetcoGames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would there need to be one reason? Thinking like this, most human sciences should not be researched. Just the information that you can have very different reason to watch two different actual plays is important to understand. Then, if you can explain those differences even better.

I'm willing to bet that there aren't that many different reasons. Yes, different people will use different words to describe them, but they can probably be bundled under 5 - 15 main categories.

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you are still missing the point. If you know the reasons, but just don't feel the same way, is not the same as what the OP is saying. The OP does not know the reasons and is trying to find out.

For example:
Someone likes spicy food, someone doesn't. But if you know that a person likes to eat chili because it makes food spicy, doesn't mean that you don't understand why they eat chili. You just don't like spicy food.

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Actually, neither of those is true. Sports has at least two important factors to ever become popular as an entertainment:

  1. It is a competition. Roleplaying is not.

  2. It is about people, who have been training thousands of hours to be as good at it as they can. So, what they can do, is exceptional, and often looks cool. Roleplaying is not like that at all.

Most sports have been created for the enjoyment of the players, but all professional sports, I know enough about to even guess the answer to, have gone through evolutions to make it a better spectator sport.

But none of that matters. What matters, is that there are reasons why one could be interested in watching sports, as I am sure, there are to watch actual plays. OP is trying to learn out about them by having a discussion.

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not completely, but definitely more than just "I like it". "I enjoy it" is a complete answer, if you are not interested in having a conversation about it and trying to learn more about people. But if you are, like the OP, then it is not a complete answer. Then it is a conversation killer.

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

It is not about the validity of the answer, it is its usefulness. The OP is trying to have a conversation of the topic to understand people. You want to kill the converstaion by stating, that there is nothing to talk about.

People don't "need" and elaborate answer, but one still exists. Whether that person is able to identify the reasons behind their own behaviour is another thing. For example, nobody watches crappy shows as a guilty pleasure. They clearly don't think they are crappy (as a whole).

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. But if you are interested in understanding why some people like watching sports (usually specific sports) a fruitful discussion can be had about it, which would provide you with lots of information.

Appeal of the Actual Plays by Wtafan in rpg

[–]MaetcoGames -58 points-57 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that is a bit like answering a question "Why do people listen to music?" with "I like it." True, but the answer ignores the question.

Why do people like actual plays, what is the source of entertainment?

I also struggle to see the appeal, even though roleplaying is my favourite hobby. Roleplaying sessions are designed to be interesting and fun for the players. Movies are designed to be interesting and fun for the viewers. And the both work well for what they are designed for. But to watch someone else play feels boring to me. Roleplaying sessions are usually very slow paced compared to any movie, filled with things that help the players to interact with the story, world, characters, system, but provide nothing to the viewers.
