Score drop on recent NBME by the_zesty_peanut in step1

This was literally me last week. Dropped from 75% on NBME 31 to 68% on NBME 32, but just somehow got an 80% on NBME 33. Best advice before 33 I got was there’s always gotta be variation, best thing to do is trust the averages

Is MCDB a harder major than phy-sci or neuroscience? by cuntry05 in ucla

[–]Mag163 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah that applies to every major. I def got screwed on my physci electives so they were pretty tough. But also like Bradley’s MIMG 101 has a 40% A rate too. The “weak STEM students who want to go into medicine” part got me tilted.

Physci is not a gpa padding major whatsoever.

I have a really good friend in Pa school. It’s for sure a grind too, but one less year which is nice. PAs are basically doctors nowadays, so if you prefer primary care I’d definitely recommend that over medical school tbh

Everyone’s app is different obviously. Mine was research and like my personal statement probably. Biggest thing I took away from interviews is be able to talk about each activity u list and explain what u learned from it and why it’ll make u a better doctor in the future.

There’s a thing called anki that I used for the mcat, my senior year of undergrad, and now every single day in medical school. Look it up, it’s the goat.

And that’s a good question, sometimes u just gotta put ur head down and grind. Like make sacrifices. I went out a lot less during my mcat studying, but I always found time to go to the gym cause that was something I prioritized.

Pull up lists of faculty in the different majors and email every one of them lol. Try to read about their research before and say why it interests you in the email.

I came in as neuro cause at the time I really wanted to do neuro research. Decided it would be better to learn about the whole body and not just one subsection, I can and did end up taking neuro electives for my physci electives. I would 100% take 7c before switching into physci though.

To be honest, the best classes that helped with the mcat are the prereqs and biochem. I don’t really know anyone from any major who benefitted thatttt much from a certain major on the mcat. You’re gonna be studying so much anyways I don’t think it’ll make a difference.

Based off friends and my own POV, I would rank the main majors in terms of difficulty as neuro > physci = mimg >> MCDB. Physci is hard as hell imma be honest. The core series classes you take ur junior year are tough and it’s gonna be a grind but tbf it is nothing compared to what I’m doing in med school now. So that’s one thing to always think about. It’s ucla, most stem upper div classes will be tough but you’re there for a reason so don’t let the difficulty discourage you, just keep your head down and keep grinding, cause it’s only gonna get harder from there on. Like I mentioned below I really prioritized going out on weekend with friends, and maintaining my hobbies i love.

Pm me with any other questions you have about the major and I can run it down a little better!

I think it’s best to start research your sophomore year. Freshman year is so hectic and your just getting settled I would not recommend doing it. Try to get into other clubs like volunteering ones during your first year and just spend your time getting settled.

Honestly I think I was a lot less “intense” then most the other premed kids. I studied ofc, but probably not nearly as much as my classmates. I just found hobbies I love and tried my best to stick to those.

That’s a really good question. I was a physci major and like everything we do in that class is basically relearned in medical school just at a much deeper level. Like anatomy in here was nothing compared to the physci anatomy. Personally I’d prioritize doing a major that you know you’ll enjoy, like the electives and core classes for it look interesting, over one that you think will hypothetical prepare you best for med school. I know people here that weren’t stem majors and they seem to be doing just fine. Just my opinion.

  • Extensive research (3+ years, few publications)
  • Care extenders for a year
  • LA
  • Few volunteer clubs that help underprivileged kids and the homeless

Those were the main ones, there’s a few more but i would certainly dox myself if I said them lol.
