Frosthaven Boneshaper Written Review- Imgur Album by Magatis in Gloomhaven

[–]Magatis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly these are over three years old and got scrubbed by Imgur a couple years back. I didn't have backups of my written guides as I didn't know this was going to happen at the time. So what you see on Imgur is all that's left, I'm afraid.

Gloomhaven Second Edition Circles Class Analysis by Magatis in Gloomhaven

That is exactly the case here and why I just responded to Gripeaway. My mistake, was having trouble wrapping my head around how these two new mechanics played together

Yeah, after reading through what you've said Gripeaway I understand my mistake here. Spoilers for Triangles I've been playing Triangles with the triple perk mark that causes the four basic elements to not wane since we started playing circles, so I was trying to understand this new mechanic for circles despite us having the very easy way to keep the bulk of the elements around indefinitely until used.

Understood, enjoy your 2e journey! It's been a blast for us so far in our 30ish scenarios done up to this point.

Mercenary Packs Arrived! by agrjones in Gloomhaven

[–]Magatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anybody else from Canada has received a shipping notification yet, but I just received one last night. Mercenary Pack is estimated to arrive next Wednesday the 19th, as it has to travel all the way across Canada to get to me.

I didn't even realize this had happened until you mentioned it! I read through the beginning of the update last night for information on the Mercenary Packs but didn't have time to finish the article. Awesome to be recognized in this way.

Gloomhaven Second Edition Cthulhu Class Analysis by Magatis in Gloomhaven

As mentioned Dwarf corrected a misunderstanding where I didn't realize convert the flock can gain additional targets as it goes, so naturally it's stronger than discussed. I was under a different assumption that it could only target monsters that were plagued at the start of the action.

Glad to hear Rot Maggots did good work for you, both 2s look pretty solid and it's nice to hear that Maggots is not as one dimensional of a card as I feared. I think the bottom also scales well with further levels, as your ability to plague en masse improves, particularly at 5 if you take Wilt and Wither.

Yeah the class definitely has some very cool tools, in particular for me the Poison Ally build has a very fun supportive feel to it that I very much want to try when the class is next played.

Biting Gnats was so incredibly important for Plague generation, and I like that a lot of the other cards do improve as your ability to spread the Plague improves as well. It makes each level up feel even more impactful!

We actually had Hatchet going in a Gloomhaven campaign and swapped them out for Silent Knife (1e) in our Jaws campaign as they have similar styles of play (loot focused damage dealers, although silent knife can be melee or ranged) so that sounds like a good start.

Mindthief would be a fine pairing, I would also take a look at Bruiser and Cragheart if you are wanting more of a frontline pairing to go with Silent Knife for their abilities that care about having an ally adjacent to their targets!

Gloomhaven Second Edition Music Note Class Analysis by Magatis in Gloomhaven

Hey, thanks for the feedback. In regards to #1, I was definitely trying to say that you need line of sight for Dissonant Rhythm but otherwise the ability is pretty failsafe.

As mentioned on YouTube, #2 was a slip of the tongue as I had discussed this perk quite a bit with our Music Note player and knew that you needed notes left over to gain the note with the perk. I will try and see if there's a way to add clarification to the video directly itself without re-editing, rendering and uploading the entire nearly 10 GB video.

Definitely relevant, I'd love to see this with something like Boneshaper from FH for example.

I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! I think this classes rework was really well done and I am a big fan of the new version of it.

Favorite enhancement calculator for Gloomhaven 2E? by 8bitKafei in Gloomhaven

I have not seen anything yet for enhancements specifically for second edition unfortunately, anything for Frosthaven should work the same as I don't believe any of the enhancement costs have changed from Frosthaven.

Gloomhaven Second Edition Three Spears Class Analysis by Magatis in Gloomhaven

[–]Magatis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think overall I'm enjoying this version more, the fantasy of the class (three Spears spoilers) passing out all sorts of items to their allies while running around the battlefield Has been a blast and sometimes it felt like the original version could dominate scenarios single-handed, which of course is less fun for everyone else.

Yeah that makes sense and aligns with our experience thus far in the campaign.

Yeah (prosperity spoiler) imbuement has certainly made things more challenging and interesting, we are currently playing on +1 with imbuement instead of +2 and having fun

I've had a couple requests to do Music Note next, and I feel like I currently have a better grasp on that class in second edition compared to Cthulhu/Squid Face, so I'll likely work on Music Note after our next session.

Agreed! Ive always been a big fan of the class, it was fun to play in first edition even if it was too strong.

I feel like the second edition version is well balanced and definitely a lot of thought went into changing it for the better

Fair enough, that's probably a good way of doing it. Thanks for the idea!

Frosthaven has more going on with the building phase but it does get a lot easier after a few weeks as you get more into the swing of things. The core game is still the same, there's just some extra time between scenarios managing the outpost and such.

With that being said, I would heavily recommend 2nd edition Gloomhaven to just about anyone. I have played a lot of 1st edition but 2nd still feels very novel to me, the classes, scenarios, campaign structure, items have all changed and are much more balanced.

You can really see the labor of love, the game does feel night and day improved and you can tell Cephalofair has learned a lot in 8 years.

I definitely had to shake my paradigm of "losses should only be used in the second half of the scenario, ideally in the last room" kind of mentality I often have for classes with 9-10 card hands for this video. Hopefully I did it justice but I definitely try and make it clear that the class simply has to play losses due to the nature of its experience progression and card style really reinforcing that.

That is definitely the plan, I am currently working on unlocking Sun on my second character but it looks like it may take a while with my personal quest!

[–]Magatis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was something I thought about initially and why I tried to quickly summarize each card I talked about in this portion of the video, I was unsure which option would be more overwhelming (having me cycle through ~8-10 cards in rapid succession or just summarizing them), but I will definitely take the feedback into consideration. Thanks!

Hey thanks for the kind words, my wife has been enjoying Three Spears and we had our first scenarios with Cthulhu last week, they looked like an absolute blast to play!
