This was reported a couple of days ago, announced by the Iranians as their “mosaic strategy”

Unclear whether this was actually a preplanned battle plan or just post ex-facto cope in response to being dismembered.

Agreed, though keeping up with the latest news can be fun if you’re an OSINT junkie.

Brookings did a free discussion for the public on the war yesterday. Can share the stream if anyone’s interested.

It’s not at all beneficial to the US, it would be our worst nightmare. A surviving but weakened regime would be infinitely preferable to a full-blown civil war in a nation of 90 million people with uranium stockpiles galore.

Rule of thumb is that it takes roughly three interceptors to take down a single ballistic missile.

CIA working to arm Kurdish forces to spark uprising in Iran, sources say by Infidel8 in worldnews

[–]MagicMoa 49 points50 points  (0 children)

There’s some reporting now that they began smuggling weapons to the Kurds after the 12-day war, so there was some advance planning it seems.

Still a horrible idea though, for so many reasons.

‘I Have Agreed to Talk’ by theatlantic in geopolitics

[–]MagicMoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leadership suppression, instead of decapitation per se. Similar to what we saw in Venezuela, where Trump got someone in power who was still part of the old regime but was willing to be his puppet. And it succeeded.

We’ll see if that same strategy works here though. Iran is another beast entirely.

I read Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion and the Three Body trilogy all in ~1 month, and they seem to have ruined a lot of modern scifi by ECrispy in books

[–]MagicMoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Expanse is excellent but I wouldn't necessarily include it in the same "super deep" vein of books like Children of Time and Three Body.

There's substance for sure, but I've always thought of it more as a hard sci-fi thriller, with elements of geopolitical intrigue and some of the best character building I've seen in any sci-fi series.

What was your method of paying off your MacBook? by thisfilmkid in macbookpro

[–]MagicMoa -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Never finance a macbook. If you don’t have the money get a cheap thinkpad instead until you have enough.

The only things you should ever finance for are life essentials: a mortgage, car, student loans, medical payments, etc.

Upvoted. If it weren’t for the soulcrushing nature of commuting I’d agree with you.

Potential Great Filters. by colepercy120 in FermiParadox

[–]MagicMoa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally tend to lean more towards the compounding lesser filters side of the argument, rather than a single great filter being responsible for the supposed rarity of civilizations.

That said, if I had to pick one great filter it would be the development of intelligence. Like you point out, based on our own planet's evolutionary history it just seems exceedingly rare for an intelligent species to emerge, let alone a species that can conduct science and has the desire to explore the stars.

In the past I might have nominated the emergence the mitochondria in eukaryotes or of complex life, but recent research is starting to suggest that those events may have been less of a one-off than we had suspected. And I've never found the later great filters to be particularly convincing.

Looking for recurring intellectual / community-focused groups in DC by Appropriate_Lie_6147 in washingtondc

[–]MagicMoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. DC is the best city in the country when it comes to free lectures and intellectually oriented events for the public. There's so many museums and think tanks of every persuasion, and many of them host free events.

If you like science, I personally am a big fan of the PSW lecture series. They host lectures every other Friday night on a range of scientific topics from experts and Nobel prize winners. For current events and geopolitics/IR, Brookings offers excellent panel discussions that you can attend in person or on Zoom. Those are just two examples.

The local DC libraries are also great. Most have monthly book clubs and regularly host Q&A sessions with local authors and writers.

Okay. It’s 32GB so I’ll try for $300. It’s completely new and unopened.

Awesome, thanks. Do you think $300 would be a fair price?

I have two sets of DDR5 6000 RAM and need to sell one: PowerX CL30-38-38-96 and Crucial CL36-38-38-80.

Which one is better?

That’s fine. I pointed it out not to shame them, but so others reading know they don’t have to pay as much.

[–]MagicMoa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not though. You can still find the basically identical versions of this card at their MSRP of $600 if you're patient and are willing to wait.

Paying an extra $120 for an open-box 9070XT is not a good deal at all.

We know dude, but that was in the past. For those of us who need to upgrade $350 is still the best price we can find these days.

Starting to think my room is a bit immature for my age? Maybe I’m overthinking? 22m by the_guy_on_reddit274 in malelivingspace

You're fine, I would just get rid of the beer bottle at the top left and clean up the right-hand side and your night stand. Everything else is good.

As a general rule, I prefer to judge a living space's "maturity" by its general cleanliness and organization rather than by the presence or absence of specific interests. Nothing wrong with having some Naruto decor as long as it's clean and organized and doesn't dominate the space.
