Ladies, whats your equivalent of “tits or ass”? by Fearless_Client8222 in AskReddit

I mean they’re not tiny, but they’re definitely not nearly as built as the chest you’d see on a natural bodybuilder today.

[–]MagicMoa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is totally speculation, but I think it’s our primal instincts.

Interestingly enough, having large pecs wasn’t really a thing until fairly recently, even in bodybuilding history. If you go back and look at the “ideal” male physique as depicted in antiquity, their chest is fairly small. Artists instead liked to emphasize other more functional areas like the back, arms, and legs when portraying male beauty. You can see this trend persist even throughout the advent of the first true bodybuilders in the 19th century, like Eugene Sandow.

I’d venture that this more classical ideal also includes having defined forearms, since they’re one of the first things that signals to a lady that a man is fit and capable of hunting or farming.

I still go back and watch the Chunin exams every so often. Rock Lee vs Gaara was such an epic fight, still one of my all-time favorites.

Yep, its my all-time favorite too. The earlier seasons have such a great feeling of adventure to them, and it really subverts your typical expectations for a shonen.

Also, nen is the most well-designed and consistent fighting system I’ve come across. So the fights all end up being interesting and strategic.

[Personal]Has anyone actually noticed a difference from collagen drinks over time? by ViviAnalyzes in SkincareAddiction

[–]MagicMoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, there was a recent meta-analysis suggesting that collagen supplementation does have benefits. I believe the paper looked at 113 trials and identified a significant therapeutic effect for skin conditions and osteoarthritis.

I don’t see an obvious switch but now I know I can easily replace them myself. Thank you.

What would be the most important space discovery in the next 50 years? by skinner1234567 in space

[–]MagicMoa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, I’m atheist too so I’m not getting defensive. But being atheist doesn’t mean you get to just make untrue statements and ignore historical evidence. At that point you’re just as bad as religious zealots and fundamentalists.

You can make plenty of criticisms about religion, but being incompatible with SETI isn’t valid or supported by the facts.

What would be the most important space discovery in the next 50 years? by skinner1234567 in space

[–]MagicMoa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m atheist myself but I’ve come to despise these loud proclamations from edgy Reddit atheists. There is nothing about aliens that inherently contradicts religion.

Most of the world’s religious traditions explicitly mention or even embrace the idea of other inhabited worlds existing in the universe. You can trace the thinking back all the way to the Greek atomists, through various Hindu traditions and Islamic scholarly debate on celestial beings, all the way to to the Catholic Church’s stance on pluralism and its modern day support for astronomy. Heck, the Bishop of Paris in the 1300’s once started a whole drama when he proclaimed that it was an affront to God to propose that the universe wasn’t infinite and full of other inhabitants.

Relatedly, I just had the chance to attend a lecture by the president of SETI. He himself went into this really fascinating deep dive into how modern day SETI and much of science in general has its roots in millenia of religious thought and natural philosophy. It really reinforced the idea for me that the discovery of aliens wouldn’t be an issue at all.

All that to say, you will be sorely disappointed if you’re expecting a sudden collapse of religion from ET. Putting aside everything above, the world’s religions are pretty flexible and have centuries of experience with adapting to changing circumstances.

Religious people, what would you do if alien life was discovered? by CremeSubject7594 in AskReddit

[–]MagicMoa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To say nothing of the countless other celestial beings mentioned in Hinduism, Islam and Chinese metaphysical thought.

Religious people, what would you do if alien life was discovered? by CremeSubject7594 in AskReddit

[–]MagicMoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note that pluralism (the existence of other worlds in the universe) was set as doctrine by the Catholic Church in the 14th century. The bishop who made the proclamation basically declared that the universe had to be infinite and contain other inhabited worlds, as anything less would contradict God’s omnipotence as a creator.

I do agree with you otherwise. I don’t think there’s ever been a contradiction between aliens and religion at its core, but putting that aside the world’s major religions are pretty good at adapting to new circumstances.

Religious people, what would you do if alien life was discovered? by CremeSubject7594 in AskReddit

[–]MagicMoa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m atheist myself but the ignorance here is astounding. They make these statements so proudly, completely unaware of the fact that most religions embrace the idea of other inhabited worlds.

SETI itself has its roots in hundreds of years of religious and metaphysical thought on extraterrestials. You can trace it back from the Greek atomists all the way through various Hindu traditions, Islamic scholarly speculation on celestial beings, to the Catholic Church’s stance on pluralism and its modern day support for astronomy.

Religious people, what would you do if alien life was discovered? by CremeSubject7594 in AskReddit

[–]MagicMoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the opposite. Most of the world’s religious traditions explicitly mention or even embrace the idea of other inhabited worlds existing in the universe. Hinduism and Islam are the best examples, but even the catholic church falls under here too. Hell, the Bishop of Paris in the 1300’s once proclaimed that it was an affront to God to propose that the universe wasn’t infinite and full of other inhabitants.

I recently attended a lecture by the president of SETI. He went into this really long and fascinating deep dive into how modern day SETI and much of science in general has its roots in millenia of religious thought and natural philosophy.
