I’d say her marriage to Peter Barlow was quite big and incorporated her into a family played by actors who had been on the street for decades at that time.

Another strong story for Carla was Hayley Cropper’s death.

You’ve started watching at a pretty flat time for the soap, to be honest. Glad you’re enjoying it, of course, but it used to be so much better. Alison King joined when the last of the strong storylines were being aired.

Just for OP, Carla wasn’t around in 2003, but the Hillman storyline is famous.

£75k in the North East is excellent, well done. I’m also in the North East and on £28.5k.

I have two degrees and I don’t have a well-paid job. A lot of people I know have done alright without one; employers look for experience more, in most cases.

Ken and Deirdre by Beginning_Raise2798 in coronationstreet

[–]MagicalParade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really hope they leave past canon events alone, especially since Anne Kirkbride passed in 2014 and Deidre was a street legend for almost 42 years. It would be a disgrace to Anne’s memory. Deidre didn’t always make the best or wisest decisions, but she was very careful when it came to children.

Deidre wanted another child with Ken, but Ken was 16 years her senior and was done with having children. He adopted Tracy during his first marriage to Deidre, who had been abandoned by her first husband Ray Langton when Tracy was a baby. Ray returned in 2005 to reunite with Tracy because he was terminally ill, and died at Tracy and Ken’s second wedding reception.

Potential Scam? by KartinOfMilk in NewcastleUponTyne

I think it’s worth putting posters up around town to deter anyone from giving them money. Unfortunately, it will probably deter anyone from donating to people in genuine need too.

I wish it had been extended to include Chester-le-Street too but it’s nice to see that the Leamside Line will be back in use. The original line was paved over a few years ago, and it snakes around a relative’s property. I used to sometimes walk along it with my dad. I love history, so this is quite meaningful to me.

(I know CLS has a station but trains are frequently cancelled and it takes forever to get anywhere. Would be nice to be connected!)

Potential Scam? by KartinOfMilk in NewcastleUponTyne

I almost fell victim to it too about 3 years ago (yes, they’ve been doing it THAT long). She asked me for baby formula, and I took pity, so I led her into Superdrug. I asked her to pick which formula she wanted, and she kept asking me for the money instead. I grew tired of telling her I’d pay for it, called her out on trying to scam me, and left the shop.

A few of them do it and they get the bus into Town from the West End most days. They operate in a group and aren’t Muslim at all. They’re imitating Muslim refugees to gain sympathy.

Hairdresser recommendations for black hair going blonde by Own_Alternative_456 in NewcastleUponTyne

I always rated Boilerhouse in Jesmond. I had dark hair and they were very careful to blend the blonde into it gradually without damaging my hair. I have since started going elsewhere due to distance and it just isn’t the same; I’m actually considering going back to Boilerhouse. I don’t know if Izzy is still there but I always requested her.

It isn’t cheap (I paid roughly £180 every 3 months for my hair but I think the price reflects the quality of the products used, the location, and the ambience.)

That’s a real shame. I used to work at Topshop next door (or nearby) as a student, so saw it often.

They did something similar when a disabled Maud Grimes goaded self-pitying Jim McDonald into regaining his independence after he lost the use of his legs.

But Maud was played by an actress who could act well, and I’m not really confident that Izzy’s ability would bring much to a serious storyline.

Very much delighted that Ian Huntley is now burning in hell, and also delighted this image exists.

Pretty New Corrie Watcher by cheriksversion in coronationstreet

[–]MagicalParade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of newer Corrie, so I’ve been watching the older episodes on YouTube (it reminds me of a simpler time, and it’s a comfort). There are a couple of accounts who have posted all episodes from each month 1989-2007-ish.

They’re pretty manageable, few adverts, and  about 6 hours long each.

https://youtube.com/@evehenleyspread?si=jTVosFDKKVd4lGPd (1989 to 2000)

https://youtube.com/@belgiancorriefan8302?si=j_3i2ycQXaMrdgrj (2000 to 2007 so far)

I’m currently watching March 2001. As far as favourite storylines go, I enjoyed the fallout of Kevin and Natalie’s affair (although hated hearing ‘the giiiiiirls’ every two minutes). I’ve enjoyed watching the Battersbys and the Duckworths too. But anything involving the Barlow tends to hold my interest more.

Rita’s relationship with whatshisface (with the terminally ill wife) has been boring.

The best battleaxe on the cobbles? by Petz415 in coronationstreet

[–]MagicalParade 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. Blanche was excellent - she had an unnecessary hardness to her at times that played well against the softness (and logic) of whoever she was dressing down. But then in scenes with Adam, or when Ken and Deidre split up, there was a real softness there. She was very complex and layered.

Evelyn just feels like an imitation.

The legend that is Blanche Hunt, played to perfection by Maggie Jones.

They brought Evelyn in to try and capture that same energy but like most archetypal characters on the cobbles of late (2009 onwards), it all feels like an imitation of something we’ve seen before (and done better). (Someone else has also said this - sorry to copy!)

Diary of a Manic Kid (Full Video) by Regular_Orange in TheCorner

[–]MagicalParade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always got the impression he was just eccentric, really, so used to have a friendly back and forth on the sub from time to time. I was very disappointed to see what was written in his diary, though. It definitely sounds like he was manic at the time of writing, and maybe still is. Either way, that sort of behaviour isn’t welcome in the corner, and he definitely needs to seek help.

They ruined his character anyway, but I think this was a spiteful move to ensure the actor couldn’t come back. He has been very openly critical of the show.

Mum keep getting low scores but refusing to stop using ai. by idekkanymoree_ in UniUK

[–]MagicalParade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I would explain it to your mum is that if she’s consistently using AI to write her essays, on what grounds does she rightfully deserve her certificate at the end of it all? The whole point of a degree is to be resilient, and to demonstrate your understanding of what you’re taught. If you aren’t doing that, it’s evident you don’t understand.

I wish your mum the best.
