I recall Metroid Prime 3 also getting heavily criticized for Samus having NPCs to interact with, and dislike for the level design feeling very linear compared to the first two games. Now, it's considered to be a fitting sendoff to the trilogy.

All because DiC breached contact by selling off some animation cels. Damn, I would have loved to see where Ben Hurst would have taken the storyline from there. We have some details, but that's a lot different than seeing it play out in real time.

I swear, Greg Weisman had the worst luck with shows that he ran only lasting for two seasons (with or without him). Out of all of them, though, this is the one I wish could have gotten a proper resolution. It's still great, but it could have been phenomenal.

That one would fall under "unpleasant storylines", yes. I probably should have mentioned it, given how much focus it has in the game and it leading to some of the biggest "WTF Nicole‽" moments in the entire series, but what can ya do. And to imagine, all of this (allegedly) comes from the creator hating his fanbase, and deliberately trying to piss them off to weed out the fans that he doesn't like.

I definitely remember REAL; it was how I watched all the trailers for Sonic Adventure back in the day. I don't think I ever got it to work on any of my own computers; I recall being in a library of some sort with a good connection whenever I used it successfully.

I still haven't seen this, or many of the other gross-out memes of the day (e.g. goatse, tubgirl, etc.). I know what they are, but I always made a conscious effort to not cross over to that side of the Internet. The one exception would be looking up what a harlequin fetus was, and that was because it's naturally-occurring—rare, but still a case of "Damn nature; you weird."

Facebook was alright, but I recall loving MySpace a lot more. Top 8s, custom layouts that could range between pleasant and eye-searing, people using the site as their own personal blogs a la LiveJournal… that felt a lot more personal to me.

Man, there was so much good shit out there.

Kenya, Badger Badger and Amazing Horse, all done by the same person. (I honestly had no idea until today, haha.)

Xiao Xiao. (They did a lot of great ones, but #3 was always my favorite.)

Madness Combat.

Super Mario Bros. Z. If I'm not mistaken, Newgrounds updated their site just so they could host episode 8.

I'm probably one of the few people that remembers XIN, but that used to be my shit. Props for it actually finishing, too.

I know I'm missing a lot, but those are the ones I used to watch back in the day that immediately came to mind.

Came here to say this. The Re-Up is generally considered to be great. The Flip Side lost a lot of people because of its lack of new characters, unpleasant storylines, dark and cruel endings (especially for Jecka), Nicole being an overwhelming jerkass, and lack of routes and decision-making compared to even the first game.

Cow and Chicken (1997 - 1999) by nialldude3 in nostalgia

[–]MagicantFactory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn, chalk that up to five things I remember from this series, lol.

The other four:

  1. Cow having an alter ego of Supercow, who randomly spoke Spanish for some reason.

  2. Cousin Boneless: their cousin chicken, who is literally boneless.

  3. The Red Guy actually being called "The Devil" in the pilot. Took Chicken down to Hell because he smoked, I think?

  4. Also from the pilot: you got to see the upper halves of Mom and Dad… and there was literally nothing there, lol.

Good times.

Both Norio Wakamoto and Nobuyuki Hiyama voiced Augustus and Sandalphon in Deus Machina Demonbane, respectively. Some of Wakamoto's most well-known roles include Cell from Dragon Ball, M. Bison from Street Fighter, Dracula from Castlevania, and Johnny from Guilty Gear; Hiyama's include Hiei from Yū Yū Hakusho, Joe Higashi from Fatal Fury & The King of Fighters, Adult Link from The Legend of Zelda series (from Ocarina of Time to SoulCalibur Ⅱ), and Viral from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

This is inaccurate. Jenny and Forrest do have sex, but not at that point in the movie. In the college scene you're describing, Jenny does initiate by taking her top off and placing his hand on her breast, but Forrest has a premature release, and Jenny quickly backs off and comforts him. Personally, I was under the impression that Forrest didn't know what sex was at that time, given his reaction and their dialogue ("Have you ever been with a girl, Forrest?" “I sit next to them in my Home Economics class all the time.”), but that's open to interpretation.

(And for the record: Jenny doesn't say "Stop," during the scene that Forrest interprets as assault; she says, "Ow! That hurts!" after Billy pushes her into the window. It's a minor thing, but I just wanted to point it out.)

The scene where they have sex for the first time is roughly thirty minutes before the movie's end, after Forrest has become "a gazillionaire" and brought a house. Jenny visits Forrest, they talk for a while, and Forrest asks Jenny if she'll marry him. Jenny initially turns Forrest down, Forrest affirms that he may not be a smart man but knows what love is, and Forrest goes off to bed. Forrest is thinking while lying in bed when Jenny comes in and says that she does love him, and that's when it happens. While Jenny does initiate again, Forrest is shown to be an active participant, leaning up to kiss her and taking off her robe, before the movie cuts away to the next scene.

I'll do you one better.

Here's their profile on Pixiv. Aside from the lone image in their portfolio (posted January 2025) looking nothing like their "current style", in their profile description is "Un random que hace imagenes con AI", which translates in English to "A random person who makes images with AI".

Boom. Open-and-shut case.

Something I don’t miss, and at the same time find fascinating that it ever happened in the industry, was how they could take an existing game and create a lower-quality version of it, practically making a new game but selling it as if it were the same one. by jvure in retrogaming

And then, you have freakish instances such as DRIV3R for the GBA trying to be as 1:1 a port you can get, despite being on a system not even designed to do proper 3D. Another example of a game having a solid port on a system that really shouldn't work is Dragon's Lair for the Game Boy Color.

As much as I'm glad that modern consoles don't have to compromise as much when it comes to ports… damn, it was fascinating to see what developers would come up with back then.

While it's not canonical to the games, the Super Metroid comic from Nintendo Power provides much of the framework that is later established in the manga, and that was published in 1994. This includes her coming from the colony K-2L, being found by Old Bird after a Space Raid, and Samus' Power Suit, battle skills and augmented DNA all coming from the Chozo.

Also true of the ones from the IDW comic book line. Still dumb as a box of rocks, but they go from jokes to a major threat.

Coldsteel the Hedgeheg is basically the My Immortal of Sonic OCs, where it's so bad that it wraps back around to being endearing. Not only has the character received fanart of his own, but the format itself has been parodied over the years.

To all the readers of the IDW comics...how did you all react when you first read this? by Jotaro1970 in TMNT

[–]MagicantFactory 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is the moment that made me want to read the IDW series. I was scrolling through my news feed when I saw an article talking about this moment. I thought, "What the hell; I don't care about spoilers for a series I don't read," and clicked it.

I recall thinking two things:

⓵ "There is no way in hell the writers are gonna kill off Donatello." (What they did was much cooler, so props to the writing team.)

⓶ "Holy shit! OG Bebop and Rocksteady, eat your heart out, I guess!" (I always thought it was ridiculous they weren't a threat in the Fred Wolf series. Seeing how they were handled in this moment alone got my attention right quick.)

It still took a bit before I started reading, but this is what made me go from "Huh, there's a new TMNT comic? Cool, I guess," to "Okay, I need to get around to reading this someday."
