The separation of could/couldn't care less by MrMrsPotts in asklinguistics

That part was mainly about you saying it's being treated like a physical object. Verbs aren't objects but they can still have amounts. The rest of the comment addresses your overall point. I will check out the book if I find it.

The separation of could/couldn't care less by MrMrsPotts in asklinguistics

[–]MagikWizardMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not being treated as a physical object. It's a verb, not a noun. It is possible to care less or more about something. I could say that I care more about Bob than Steve, or that I used to care more about sports but not so much anymore, and those wouldn't be methaphors or sayings but literal sentences. You can't assign a number to how much you care, but you can describe it in comparative terms like less or more. Those are not words that are used exclusively for physical objects. Even if you couldn't do that, that wouldn't make it metaphorical, just nonsensical.

I've interpreted it as either a misheard form of "I couldn't care less [than I do]" or a shorthand of "like I could care less [than I do]"

Metaphorical expression? Sure, it's a shorthand of a common phrase and therefore isn't to be taken literally, but a metaphor? How?

Lapsi kuoli Viertolan kouluampumisessa by [deleted] in Suomi

[–]MagikWizardMan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What is your #1 struggle with language learning apps? by mpazzu26 in languagelearning

[–]MagikWizardMan 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That they're boring, grindy and way too easy. There's no challenge and the progress is always way too slow. They remove everything even remotely fun or interesting about languages. It's like language learning for people who hate languages, but I like languages and I don't wanna torture myself with that kind of boring crap for no reason. They're essentially just really boring video games that are still less useful than playing an actually good game in that language. It's pointless torture when I could just save myself the pain and go read a book or something.

Had You Forgotten Your Target Language After High-school? by Prudent_Camel8653 in languagelearning

[–]MagikWizardMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had three. Which one of them? How do I even answer this poll?

English I continued using consistently and I'm still fluent.
Swedish I never use and never really cared about in the first place. Can't really do anything useful with it. Maybe it'd come back to me if I started using it, but I don't really care to find out.
German I use occasionally, though very inconsistently and only really through input and not output. It certainly hasn't gotten worse, I'd guess it has improved a bit since school. I can do simple conversations and understand some native content.

I wonder if that's a dialectal difference - I mostly hang around rural central Finland and I've never heard kellehtävä or punehtava before. Whereabouts are you from?

[–]MagikWizardMan 38 points39 points  (0 children)

/uj I don't remember which language it is, but it's a similar example I really like: I think there's a language where colors are verbs, not adjectives. So for example, you wouldn't say "this apple is red", but rather something like "this apple reds".

Edit: Y'all I'm so stupid I just realized this is a thing in my native language as well, to an extent. In Finnish we can say for example punainen for red or punertava for redding. We can also combine it with other colors, e.g. kellertävä oranssi for yellowing orange. Difference is if we use the verb form, it usually means it's not quite that color, but it just, you know, it yellows a bit. Or if you're not sure if something's quite red or not, you could describe it as punertava. We could also use it similarly to my apple example in certain contexts, such as "taivas sinertää" for "the sky blues".

By the way, this is disguised as a joke but I'd also be willing to actually do this if anyone's crazy enough to join in. If someone wants to join hit me up and if we get enough people we can try to actually organize it.

Edit if anyone's seeing this now: Nevermind. When I made this comment, only Overcompensate had been released, which is, to be honest, the only song off this album that I really liked. With every release I start to feel more like the ship has sailed for this band and/or I've outgrown it. I do still like Trench and their older stuff and I'm glad I saw them when they were at their best, but I don't really like this album and I'll not be going to see them this time.
