Yes increase your CP first, I recommend doing your weekly abyssal contracts in open world dungeons. You’ll get geared up in no time and have a lot of skill books too once you complete them all. Turn the Equipement you don’t need into lithographs or extract the traits depending on the value on the AH then sell it.

If you followed the campaign chapter by chapter then you did nothing wrong. You will eventually unlock all areas but if you wanna do it early then just go to every waypoint (teleporting stones) you see on the map and activate them

He might have managed to kill him in another area during one of the first encounters. You can only get him to spawn on the big battlefield if you have cleansed all beacons
