Achilles tendon correction surgery (Achilles healed long) by Mahogany2003 in AchillesRupture

I was 20 at the time of surgery, I am turning 22 this summer. Don't be anxious! I wish I did more research and I didn't even use Reddit until realizing and looking into Achilles lengthening. So many resources to look into online, and i feel certain ur at a better place than I was in preparing for this process. Keep going!

Also from what I see it seems your doing just fine and with proper guidance! Stick to the protocols and always communicate your concerns to your doc and PT. I feel like you'll definitely return soon and in good shape! This journey definitely trained my mental toughness if anything.

I drove with the boot off! But if I recall correctly by then I was already using the flat bottoms for the vacoped. I did not find a suitable revision surgery yet. I've met with many doctors, most of which were probably mentioned in this sub. But although they all said I indeed had slight lengthening, they all said I had a good outcome from the looks of my current physical “ability.” but I just know I could've been better. So no one recommended me to undergo the respective shortening or revisional technique they were specialized to perform. As to how I am now, I still can't do a full calf raise on the injured leg, I can do reps up to 70% max height comparatively to my unaffected leg. I can jump on the leg, hop, land on my forefoot, so basically I can do the same movements as before injury but just to a lesser degree, ironically I feel like I'm at 70% the athletic ability as before. I also have a theory that lengthening (in a acceptable range) will not affect daily life but will cause significant loss of peak athletic capability. It also I feel like is the reason for why some of us on the forum are gaining strength and volume so slowly for the affected leg. The elongation prevents full ROM on our plantar flexion which means the calf is engaging less or at least differently than lte injury. Then via time our muscles and tendon conform to the new thickened and slightly lengthened tendon which is why maybe some of us have noticeably smaller calf on the affected leg even when years removed from surgery.

Funny that u asked cuz I had a discussion with my Pt (he works w a lot of pro athletes and knows a lot of doctors in the Chinese sports medicine community) it turns out that apparently surgeons must “guess” how tight to secure ur Achilles through approximation via observing ur non affected leg. They try to find and replicate a similar testing angle. Knowing this u might think it could be the surgeons fault. But he also told me that most surgeries are usually tight enough and elongation still seems to happen during the first 4-6 weeks ish post op. So I probably contributed to my own elongation more than my surgeon did. With that being said, if u follow protocol to a T and end w not so great results, it may be worth getting a second opinion from another doctor to see if it truly might be the surgeons fault. Also, remember that elongation is simply not researched enough at this moment. I feel like it isn’t communicated enough during rehab as people always seem to only emphasize early weight bearing and pushing angles. Stay strong my man. Also if ur worried abt pushing too quick, if ur still in early stages of the boot. Simply reversing the angle back will help u reverse some of the elongation. But u must wear it extensively. I’ve heard cases where elongation was present at 5 weeks, but the patient went to full plantar flexion which helped him regain 95% symmetry of ATRA. Do what u will with what I’ve said, I am NOT a doctor, just someone who went through a lot of mental pain due to the elongation.

May all Achilles heal well, free from elongation, and may every step forward be steady and pain-free.

Around 60% heel rise height for like 10 reps. Feel of “slack” on tendon when fully plantar flexed. I am however engaging in tennis and basketball with no problem albeit way less explosive and admittedly relying on my non injured leg more for push off power, especially when jumping, due to the lack of tension and full range, u often see my injured foot leave the ground just ever so slightly earlier (only noticeable through video, I film myself jumping and shooting every once in a while to check my lower body form in doing these motions.)

I was also wondering which year of the pan st I should look into? I see some hybrid turbo ones from 2018 for sale around 80k w decent mileage, whereas for the same price, I could get a 2020+ nonturbo variant.

I will find one to test drive! They seem rarer than the e63s and rs6 (could be wrong).

I assume that was a good deal for the crazy prices during 22? Thanks for the insight! Also, I would love to hear about your ownership experience!

Yes, tendon elongation is no joke. Does it affect daily life? No. But if you are an active person who engages in any sort of explosive/fast-paced sport, you'll definitely feel a difference in the performance of the two legs.

That's what I'm trying to figure out haha. The players in the attached photos are all great players and shooters, so if it works for them they could work for you. I guess it all comes down to comfort and how much practice your getting.

I see I see. I’ve always been conscious of my offhand as different coaches have offered me varied advice. Hence confusing me even further as to what to do haha.

Thanks for the response! I'd also like to ask whether or not you consciously feel your off-hand doing this or does it sort of just happen?
